I spent three of the longest hours in history last night at a 2nd grade talent show. Yikes. I mean, the kids were adorable and very brave, but yikes. Some of my wife's friends were there (some of their kids performed), so there was much chatting afterwards. I couldn't get at the beer fast enough when we finally got home.

Little kids really suck at singing

It is not cute, it is agony

It's quite important to encourage kids to pursue their talents at a young age.

The one I hated was Kindergarten Graduation
What is worth celebrating in completing Kindergarten?

"Talent" is an interesting phenomenon. As a boy, I have a lifetime of observation in my fave sports, and it is my considered conclusion that parenting and coaching have a great deal of impact on the relative success of kids - up to a point. Kids with little real talent can be "stars" in grade school and the first couple years of HS, but at that point talent takes over. The well-coached kids are superseded by the kids with superior size, speed, strength, quickness, optimal hand-eye coordination, and so on.

I suspect the same principle applies in other sports and in music, academics, and maybe even life.

This is one reason why I pay little attention to talent shows, kid tournaments, and things of that nature, when it is likely that the kids having the greatest success are merely the ones whose parents can afford to pay for coaches, mentors, summer camps and so on.

Is this a joke? My kids only graduation ceremonies were for high school and college.
Your children must have had as lousy of a childhood as you did! Why shouldn't we celebrate accomplishments every chance we get? I am sure for you that was a rare occurrence that you accomplished anything. They probably had them, but you were too busy to attend or didn't give a shit!

Actually, that is when puberty takes over

Judge much? I had a GREAT childhood and so did my kids. I had to look it up but Kindergarten AND elementary graduation is a real thing! The particular schools my kids attended did not waste their time on that silliness. They DID get an excellent grounding in the fundamentals which propelled them to getting advanced degrees in Math and Aerospace engineering.

Then why are you so bitter and downright dumb? :auiqs.jpg: :auiqs.jpg: :auiqs.jpg: :auiqs.jpg: :auiqs.jpg:

Half the bits we used to do at talent shows in the 80's would get our asses cancelled these days.

My favorite was still the one where to find out what time it was you started chanting like Native Americans until someone off stage yelled "Hey you idiots, don't you know it's 3 in the morning!!!!"

And the one about there "wherethefugowi" tribe.

American school kids reading levels are at THIRTY YEAR LOWS!!!! But lets give them a graduation ceremony and tell them how SPECIAL they are! They can't read a Goddam cereal box but WHEEE let's celebrate!! Less focus on ridiculous ceremonies and more teaching that would be great.

Just how much time do you think is devoted to such ceremonies?

Dude, it’s kindergarten. They spend hours every single week just coloring and playing games. They’re like 5 years old
