Less than 5 percent. So much is left for Assad to use on his people.

Syria unlikely to meet deadline on its deadliest chemical agents

President Bashar Assad's government has delivered less than 5% of its deadliest chemical weapons agents. The deadline is next week.

WASHINGTON — Syria has delivered less than 5% of its deadliest chemical weapons agents to international authorities a week before a deadline to surrender the entire cache, officials said Wednesday.

The government of President Bashar Assad, which is fighting a bitter civil war against insurgent militias, has transferred about 32 tons of the so-called Category 1 chemical agents to the Syrian port of Latakia, where it has been loaded onto ships for destruction at sea.

But about 670 tons remain in collection points, and officials say it is unlikely that Syria will meet the Feb. 5 deadline.

Exclusive: Syria has shipped out less than 5 percent of chemical weapons
Wed Jan 29, 2014 - Syria has given up less than 5 percent of its chemical weapons arsenal and will miss next week's deadline to send all toxic agents abroad for destruction, sources familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.
The deliveries, in two shipments this month to the northern Syrian port of Latakia, totaled 4.1 percent of the roughly 1,300 tonnes of toxic agents reported by Damascus to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "It's not enough and there is no sign of more," one source briefed on the situation said.

The internationally backed operation, overseen by a joint OPCW-United Nations mission, is now 6-8 weeks behind schedule. Damascus needs to show it is still serious about relinquishing its chemical weapons, the sources told Reuters.

Failure to eliminate its chemical weapons could expose Syria to sanctions, although these would have to be supported in the U.N. Security Council by Russia and China, which have so far refused to back such measures against President Bashar al-Assad.

The deal under which Syria undertook to eliminate its chemical arsenal stopped the United States and its allies from launching bombing raids to punish Assad for a chemical attack last August and made clear the limits to international action against him. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon suggested in a report to the Security Council this week that shipments had been unnecessarily delayed and urged the Syrian government to speed up the process.

Syria Misses Chemical Weapons Deadlines, But No Talk of Consequences
January 31, 2014 -– The Assad regime looks set to miss a second consecutive deadline in a meticulously-negotiated timetable for surrendering its chemical weapons stocks for destruction, prompting protests by the Obama administration that it is “dragging its feet” but no talk of any steps to enforce compliance.
Instead, the administration is asking Russia to press its ally in Damascus to meet its commitments, contained in an agreement that saw the U.S. shelve threats to launch military strikes in response to the regime’s use of chemical weapons last August. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Thursday Secretary of State John Kerry had raised the matter with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, while Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said during a visit to Poland that he had discussed the matter with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Shoigu.

The three main deadlines set down in an agreement negotiated between the U.S. and Russia after the August attack were December 31 (the date by which the regime was to have moved its most dangerous chemicals to the port of Latakia for removal by Danish and Norwegian cargo vessels); February 5 (the remaining chemical to be moved to Latakia); and June 30 (the target date for completion of the elimination of the entire arsenal.)

But U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reported to the U.N. Security Council this week that Syria had missed the now month-old Dec. 31 deadline, and noted that the Feb. 5 deadline was looming. Psaki echoed those concerns at a State Department press briefing, adding, “In all of this time, the Syrian regime has moved less than five percent of the chemicals to the port.”

“They’re dragging their feet,” she said. “We need them to pick up those feet and run with this and move forward in moving the chemical weapons stockpile to the port. The international community is prepared to take the steps we’ve committed to, and what we’re asking the regime to do and the Russians to put necessary pressure on them to do is to abide by their commitment that they agreed to just a couple of months ago.”

‘Ups and downs’

Who cares?

Americans don't want to fight another fucking war for Israel.

It was likely Israels chemical weapons used in Syria in that false flag operation they tried to pin on Assad.

Sherri's "who cares" sums this up perfectly.

Who cares for a bunch of kids (dozens of thousands is just a number) being butchered in Syria.

Look, a Jew opened a balcony in Jerusalem.

Lets blame the Joooooooooooooos

Of course, the Zionist distorts my words.

We are speaking of a time deadline to destroy Syrias chemical weapons you Zionists claim Assad has not or will.not meet.

I do not hear the UN complaining, just Zionists beating the drum for more US wars.

Wow, I was surprised to see you were the last poster in a thread about Syria. A first for you to post somewhere that was not to do with Israel. But of course you made it about Israel, you 3 a.m. Islamist poster.

We don't want you to fight Assad, stupid.

When it comes to Syria, "better the bad you know".

You sided with Al-Quaeda, that's your own stupidity.

What we are is careful. The chemicals are used by both sides against innocent children, but an Islamic liar such as yourself must paint it like the Jews are responsible, so your terrorists brothers will get clean sheet.

You're pathetic.

Why do actions like this surprise anyone? Saddam Hussein had chemical weapons. The only people he used them on were the Iranians and his own people. Assad has chemical weapons and the only people he uses them on are his own people and insurgents that are trying to over throw him. When I hear about someone committing atrocities I can always count on two truths: 1. The atrocity was always committed by a two-bit dictator (usually Islamic) that came to power in some Arabic or Middle Eastern shit hole country or the goose-stepping joke of an army that does his bidding. 2. The victims of the atrocities are always his own people, they were unarmed and their only crime is to ask for incredible things like self-determination, freedom, and food.

Barry draws a line in the sand saying that if Assad (the two-bit dictator in this instance) uses chemical weapons, it would be the act that would necessitate action by the US. When Assad ignores him, Barry puts the responsibility on the UN, KNOWING that Assad won't cooperate. But, it relieves Barry of responsibility. And sure enough, here we are. Assad hasn't provided an inventory of his weapons and less than 5% of the weapons that are supposed to be turned over are in possession of the responsible parties.

Idiots of the left heralded how Barry and his criminal cronies were right on top of this chemical weapon thing (RDean, etc) and were crowing about how he had solved such a horrible problem without military action. I said then and I have been proven correct, that Assad would wait until attention was focused else where and he would basically ignore the demands. And that is what has happened. Barry looks like the amateur fool he is. And the results? More will die. Only the ones to suffer are always children, always innocent and always the two-bit dictators own people.

Sherri is obviously an idiot and a racist. Israeli false flag operation? Lady, if the Israeli's did it then Assad would be dead and so would his top generals, not a bunch of women and children. AND, you'd never know how because unlike the US, they would just do it and keep their mouth shut. You know we get it, you have always wanted to be a camp counselor at Auschwitz. I'll bet it just makes you crazy to know that the Israelis can kick anyone's ass in the middle east at any time and do so routinely. To me it's funny...
