Syria holding British Columbian man

OTTAWA - Syrian officials are holding a man with dual Syrian-Canadian citizenship, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed Thursday.
Maher Ahmad Zaydan, of Surrey, B.C., was arrested upon his return to Syria April 21. Zaydan had travelled to Syria with his wife and two children.

Canada has asked for access to meet Zaydan, a Foreign Affairs spokesperson said Thursday.
"We are, of course, trying to establish consular access through our Canadian Embassy there," said Liberal MP Dan McTeague, parliamentary secretary for Canadians abroad. "We are working with the family as well."
