Statue Removals Etc. - A List

so you are basically conceding that the Confederate Traitors don't deserve statues, but want to knock down other statues for dubious reasons.

Here's the thing. As Malcolm Reynolds said on the show Firefly, "It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of him was one kind of sommbitch or another."

The thing is, most of the guys on the list did do good things that merit statues.

Nathan Bedford Forest had no such redeeming qualities. Neither did Robert E. Lee, for that matter.

Then they all need to come down, every FDR, LBJ and Woodrow Wilson memorial as well

FDR built internment camps to imprison innocent Japanese.
FDR refused to partake in anti-lynching policies.
FDR in 1937 made an attempt to corrupt the Supreme Court by adding stooge judges who vowed to support his policies.
FDR invited all gold medalist of the 1936 Olympics to the White House but one man - a black man. FDR refused to even send him a congratulatory letter. Owens won 5 gold medals. FDR only honored the white players.

WE MUST TEAR DOWN EVERY STATUE AND MONUMENT OF HIM!!!!!!!!!!

Here's the thing. FDR did make some mistakes. But saving the world from fascism kind of makes up for that.

Lee, Forest, Davis, these guys really don't have enough things on the good side of the ledger to make up for the bad.

If they are going to be consistent in their outrage, yes....

According to who? Again, if there is some moral code written down somewhere, please show me. Obviously you seem to be privy to it....

You are more than welcome to list the things these guys did that was good to merit a statue.

Of course, they put up statues of these guys as a big fuck you to black people after taking their rights away. That's why the statues need to come down.

Everyone knows the civil war was not just about slavery.

It's not like these guys were evil black hating monsters. Everyone during that time was prejudiced against blacks. It's not that simple and everyone knows it. Like the schools, they don't want to talk about all the details so it makes more sense. Not right necessarily, but in light of the times, makes some sense...

actually, it was just about slavery. Read the declarations of secession, every last one of them lists slavery as the reason. Now, after the war, when it all looked bad, all the assholes claimed it was about other things. But it was about slavery... I'm so sorry.

No, it was never okay, and it was never acceptable.

These guys were monsters. Especially people like Nathan Forrest, who was a slave trader before the war, murdered black POW's during the war and founded the KKK after the war.

And you guys think a statue of him in Memphis right in the middle of a black neighborhood is acceptable somehow.

Imagine if Egyptians would have removed all of their statues etc....the Greeks, Italians...etc. etc.
History is not just a record of good things that happen, it is a record of ALL things that happened.

A father and a son are walking in a park, the child sees a statue and asks his father "who is that man?"...the father tells him it is General Lee, and then tells him the story of how America was once split, how at that time America had slavery, and how the good guys won.... or...the child never sees the statue and never asked the question.

Okay, but then the child asks, "If Lee was a bad man, why doesn't he have an awesome statue of him?"

Actually, the Egyptians DID remove statues of Pharaohs they didn't like. The reason why we found King Tut's tomb is that his father/uncle was involved in a religious revolution that everyone was embarrassed about later, and they removed their names from the official monuments.

Which means everyone forgot to loot Tut's tomb when everyone else's was being looted because they forgot it was there.

Everyone was prejudiced, we would have to take all statues down in that case

TBH, I don't care, I just hate morality police.

Religious fanatics destroying history. Another conservative false equivalency. A closer equivalent would be how evangelicals are busy denying scientific discoveries of the past. Religious fanatics all have some problem with reality.

Tearing things down to deny history is just dumb. If people want to not believe historical evidence as a personal belief who cares.
