Amazing story about a famous horse that I had never heard before. Animals never cease to amaze me.

****************************************************************

Some 60 years after carrying wounded soldiers and ammunition during heavy firefights, a decorated war horse praised as America’s greatest equine soldier during the Korean War is finally being immortalized.

Staff Sgt. Reckless, a Mongolian mare that served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, made 51 solo trips during a five-day battle in March 1953, carrying nearly 10,000 pounds of ammunition and explosives from a supply depot to the front lines.

She was wounded twice and later received two Purple Hearts for her service, as well as several other military decorations. On Friday, a 10-foot bronze statue by sculptor Jocelyn Russell of the courageous — and insatiable — horse will be unveiled at the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Va.

If you are in the area and interested in military history the Marine Corps museum is a wonderful experience. It is a thoroughly modern building with amazing displays. The biography of Victor (Brute) Krulak, USMC general who fought in WW2, Korea and Vietnam gives insight into the (mostly democrat) administrations that tried to do away with the Marine Corps after WW1, WW2 and Korea. Krulak would have become Commandant but he was forced into retirement by LBJ.

Hooah, Marines remember even though the Truman administration tried to do away with the Marine Corps.

Got some proof of that? The Truman library has his letters that say otherwise.

It's easy to find. Look up secretary of defense Louis Johnson under Truman. In an interview in Time magazine 9/18/50 Truman was quoted "The Marine Corps is the Navy's police force and as long as I am president that is what it will remain. They have a propaganda machine equal to Stalin". Defense secretary Johnson had already started to dismantle the Marines by banning the government recognition of the Marine Corps birthday and expelling the Marine Commandant from Joint Chief of Staff meetings and denying every Marine Corps budget request. The Marine air wing was in the process of being disbanded. Ironically it was the Marine Corps who bailed the little bean counter's timid ass out of the mess he created in Korea.
