I've recently seen commercials for some Myasthenia Gravis charity, featuring retired tennis star, Monica Seles. Most of "us" can't think of Monica Seles without recalling the felonious attack that compromised the remainder of her career and life. I've pasted a description from Wikipaedia below.

It's got me thinking, from a sports standpoint this was a true atrocity, and to make it worse, it was successful! This guy, a rabid Steffi Graf fan, was so keen to get rid of Seles so that Graf could recapture the World #1 ranking, that he tried to kill Seles! And he succeeded in getting Seles out of the way.

"A teen phenomenon, Seles became the youngest-ever French Open champion in 1990 at 16. She went on to dominate the women's circuit in 1991 and 1992, compiling a total of eight major championships while still a teenager. However, on April 30, 1993, Seles was the victim of an on-court attack when an obsessed fan of Seles' rival Steffi Graf stabbed Seles in the back with a knife as she was sitting down between games. Seles did not play professional tennis for over two years following the stabbing, struggling with depression and an eating disorder. After returning in 1995, Seles claimed a ninth major championship at the 1996 Australian Open, but was unable to consistently produce her best tennis. She played her last professional match at the 2003 French Open.

Can anyone think of another sports-related crime that had such a major impact on the sport itself?

Sports-Crime: Is it a thing?

Yes. It is a crime what Bob Nutting has done to the Pittsburgh Pirates and it is a crime to still call them a pro baseball team, just as most every other sports team in that city has fallen.

Just as it is a crime for a team as bad as the Pittsburgh Steelers to make believe they are legitimate or ever will be legitimate Playoff contenders for a Super Bowl ever again.

Even now, a washed up has been retired ex-QB going on 45 years old who played like a girl last year won't even give the Steelers the time of day in an answer as they beg him to come back and play badly for them one last year.

So finally, a full 15 years after the Steelers SHOULD have been looking for a replacement to Ben, they will again have to start looking for a REAL QB other than Kenny Pickett off the Pitt football team right across the hallway.

In fact, it is becoming a crime to still even have pro sports in so shabby and small a market as Pittsburgh.
