Wow! Incredible. And Denmark would have to sign off on anything in this area of nonsense.

Denmark's prime minister held a 45-minute phone conversation with Donald Trump where she says she delivered the same message about Greenland as the territory's leader: it's not for sale.

The official readout of PM Mette Frederiksen's call addressed in black and white one of the most stunning issues of the presidential transition: Trump describing U.S. ownership of the world's largest island an 'absolute necessity.'

I've seen Bill O'Reilly brag about Trump playing games like this, as if it's a great strategic ploy.

I have said before -- Trump will raise stakes with outrageous words, then take any deal he can get in order to be able to brag about deals. Like his supposed writing of books about deals.

This ^^^ is exactly why you are an irrelevant poster on a social media site and Trump is POTUS #47.

If the people of Greenland want their freedom from their Danish masters, they have a right to claim it.

They aren't "for sale"by Denmark, and why should the Kingdom of Denmark get 5 cents for acknowledging the freedom of the Greenlandites.

How does pissing Denmark off get him anything other than the US with less allies?

Does anyone here see the irony? Leftists HATE colonizers, right? Greenland is a colony of Denmark, and Trump wants to make it a U.S. Territory, with all of the benefits that that entails...investment, infrastructure, tourism, strong currency.

Nobody knows how this initiative will play out, but we will be in better shape w/r/t Greenland and its resources than we are now.

If Denmark is holding the Greenlandites as subjects against their will, they deserve to be "pissed off".

Greenland does pretty well out of being a part of Denmark. Greenland has home rule with a lot of control, they have Greenlandic as their official language, it has representatives to a few other countries, including the US.

2/3rd of Greenland's budget comes from Denmark. So, were it to leave Denmark, the people would be massively poorer, hence why there hasn't been much of an independence movement, it's more of an emotional thing. They won't push for a vote because they don't want a vote.

In 2018 the PM of Denmark literally said that Greenland needs to make clear what it wants, and since then, nothing.

There's talk of an independence vote in April this year, but chances are it won't happen.

Being a part of the US wouldn't solve their problems, leaving Denmark takes away their defense possibilities and increases the chances that the US will just screw them over.

What exactly does Greenland gain by being taken over by the US?
Right now, they have better health insurance than we do.
Nobody is knocking down the doors to visit Greenland. Iceland is a much bigger tourist draw

It doesn't matter.... Trump is negotiating directly with Greenland.

Nope.... Denmark has already told Greenland that they are free to go if that's what they want.
So Trump will negotiate directly with them.
In fact I hear that there is a commission going to Greenland early in February.

Why are we discussing this idiocy that's not going to happen?

It will happen.... Once the US money starts flowing into that place it'll only be a matter of time. You forget the United States is a very imperialistic nation. They're good at this kind of thing.

Even if Greenland started moving away from North Pole, it is difficult to believe it would melt in any significant fashion for at least 100k years, likely longer. The Greenland ice age is "only" 1-2 million years old, and it has scraped off the land pretty thoroughly...

Greenland's "sea level map" with current sea level and all ice removed is below. Fortunately, the southern tip has only "glaciated" for the past 800 years or so. The Vikings were farming there. We really need to have good confidence in a prediction of Greenland's future tectonic movement to value it properly. If Greenland continues NW, which is where the Atlantic Fault pushes it, it will be in ice age for 10+ million years and that ice will continue to grow.

It fuels their brawn ego.

It'll get to the point where the world will say, "Quit the shit Trump and sit the **** down". There's more than enough in the 50 states to sort out to keep him busy.

No, Greenland is not considered a colony; it is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, meaning it has a high degree of self-governance while still being part of the Danish realm; its colonial status ended in 1953 when it was redefined as a Danish county.
