One of the things that is misleading about tax rates is that most other countries just have a Federal rate. The US has Federal, State and Local. The combined State and Local tax burden is almost equal to our Federal burden.

One of the things that is misleading about tax rates is that most other countries just have a Federal rate. The US has Federal, State and Local. The combined State and Local tax burden is almost equal to our Federal burden.

We spend almost 40% of the GDP on the friggin combined cost of government in this country and that is despicable.

It is, and add to that the reality that Uncle Sam provides defense services for a lot of those countries, allowing them to spend less than they otherwise would on defense. Thought experiment, what do you think would happen if America pulled all her military presence out of Europe? Does anyone think the French REALLY trust the Germans and would not quickly ramp up their own forces "just in case"? It would quickly lead to the loss of the lavish Nanny states, as tax revenue would be diverted into building up the militaries of these countries and since taxes are already extremely high, there would be little room to raise them again to cover it.
