You’re not necessarily wrong, but I think you’re seeing it that way because of your involvement with places like USMB where the binary nature of our current political system is greatly amplified and thus lack of objectivity and narrow mindedness becomes more prevalent.

In my own experience, Average Joe Citizen whether “liberal” or “conservative” tends to evaluate arguments on a case by case basis on what he/she perceives are their own individual merits. They may lean one way or the other but are ultimately persuadable if they see the argument as sound.

Only on the extremes do you find the narrow minded fanatics that only pay attention to labels and accept everything their own particular label thinks is correct and reject anything from that what they perceive as coming from the opposite label whether that argument is sound or not.

I think abortion, birth control, same sex (and marriage ).
All frowned upon by conservatives because they offend their spirit deity.
So they elect politicians who create laws penalizing it, making it difficult or even illegal, they stack
courts with judges sympathetic to their religious beliefs who'll rule with their just and righteous beliefs.
