Social Security, facing pressure from DOGE, weighs big cuts to phone service

You can download one from SSA.gov but it sometimes is a hassle signing up with ID,me but once you do every silly thing to get your used id and password it fairly easy.

Our local office is packed everyday from the time open until closed. Most people don't have the time to stand in line.

Yep, if you are nearing retirement age...

I highly recommend getting your SS accounts and Medicare accounts setup WELL in advance.

We've had ours for a number of years to track statements, etc.

The point is you want all the login issues solved and smoothed out well BEFORE you want to use them.

As a result her application for Medicare Part B was quick and painless. (She'll take SS later.)

Since we don't either, are you telling me that you don't file, and neither should I?
.

I'm not a CPA. Take your questions to one.

But this is my second year of not filing. Glad I found a CPA that was honest.

I support this money-saving move.

People can go to:

then set up your preferences. I you want an electronic notice of your SS earnings or a paper copy, you can set that in your preferences.

I'm sure SSA gets millions of calls daily, so if you don't call at the start of the day, you're going to wait. So if anyone has t wit 5 hours, it means that instead of the agency being closed, they need to hire more people.

What's being done isn't saving money.

Called before Christmas as my wife was retiring Feb 1st and we had some questions.

We were on hold for about 15 minutes and the person was very helpful.

Of course we are in Virginia and called early in the morning before Central, Mountain, and Pacific people came online.

Lucky you.

My dad had to call them and they put him on hold for over 4 hours, and he had to hang up.

When I had to call, they had an option to be called back, and gave me an approximate time that would happen. Worked beautifully.

You just can't walk in anymore, you have to call and make an appointment, but nobody answers the phone so you can make one.....My understanding is that it's been that way for quite some time.

Perhaps that has changed as far as walk-ins go. :dunno:

Doge is pressuring the Social Security Admin to close down much of its phone answering network, referring recipients to the internet or in person field offices. This seems to be the opposite of efficient, given the older makeup of their recipient base.

Don't get around much, do you? Pretty much every private sector company does this.

Neither my wife, nor I, got our SS earnings reports this year. I tried calling them yesterday, but got the computer voice that is completely worthless.
Your earnings report is on-line. Go to SSA.gov and create an account and you can access all of your information. They switched to internet as a cost saving measure. No postage going to your old address or clogging up the mail.

I called and asked, and the office in my area accepts walk-ins, but I'm in a smaller area. Greatest population concentration is just over 200K.
