If your president truly took this step to do good for the Venezuelans and return the oil to the people, and if no one in the US will unjustly enrich themselves from it, then it was a good step! Agreed. I'm glad I'm not in charge of it. Seems to me, this is an experiment in "regime change by decapitation". We chopped off the head of the snake and left the rest of the body alone.

The logical result is the body dies, but that's never a graceful thing, it thrashes a lot before it stops moving. When Maduro's people stop getting paid we expect unhappiness I'm sure. The biggest problem will come from the jungles in the south. We will see if the Venezuelan army is capable of handling it. In a good world the army would join forces with the indigenous people and drive the rebels out, then repurpose the mine workers to build roads and such.

The drug problem isn't just about one country. It starts with societies consuming drugs. But I also think not enough is being done at the borders. If the good countries work together, we can manage this. And for me, Europe and the USA belong together. As a German, I am incredibly grateful that the USA overthrew our regime in 1945, imposed a democracy on us that we are still very happy to live in today, and I hope most people here understand the values of democracy. Why did things go so well in Germany after 1945, but so often not in other countries?
