Is it just a curious coincidence that Ashlii and Kirk were both almost exactly shot the same way except she was on the other side of the neck and a little lower.

That was a kill shot. At that close range, Byrd could have aimed for the gut or even a leg, instead, he aimed for Ashlii's face. Ashlii dropped right there where she was hit, and bled to death.
