I would agree with part of your comments, but I'll say that these countries have developed cultural norms that are much more suited to their government approach.

You can talk about happiness and freedom in the same phrase, but when you have an entitled class that mooches off others and a greedy class (which we do have), you (as a nation) are not going to be that happy.
