How common were those back then?

Way more provocative than anything girls wear today

Well, I suppose it is a personal choice. I'm not really sure the reason for bras other than modesty. I suppose if you are a C or D cup, you really need one, but they don't seem to prevent sagging since everyone wears one yet older women still sag, and I would assume that was their main purpose for wearing?

Does that make a brassiere an affectation?

In some parts of the world like Europe, people seem much less concerned with bosoms than here in America.

Oh BTW, in every historical instance when a society devolved into debauchery and moral decay, soon after, that civilization collapsed.

Wearing a bra causing sagging.

Wearing a bra causing sagging.

OK, you've got my attention. Why? If I may anticipate, my guess is that wearing a bra weakens the chest muscles which normally support the boob (by using them less) that their loss of tone is what allows the boob to sag.

Amirite?

I actually rarely wear a bra when I'm at home, but I don't like being out in public without one on. The only time that I did that was when I went to the beach and I forgot to bring one to change into after I went out for ice cream afterwards. I just prefer to have one on in public even though I'm pretty sure that people won't know. I'm pretty flat chested anyways.

Clothing wasn't that revealing back in the early years, that women wore bras to prevent their breast from flopping around underneath their clothing because it's very desirable for men to watch them flop around.
But if a woman doesn't wear them, their breast will eventually sag down to their waist like an empty hot water bottle that'll be less desirable to men.

Not according to the women I know

But damn I miss the 60s with peasant blouses and tank tops with no bra

Smiling just thinking about it

Here's looking at you.

You know, this is really a very simple problem.

Some people advocate for the bra (modesty, social standards, support), while others point out they can cut, are painful, hot, and uncomfortable.

So here is the perfect solution: Just cut the cups out of the bras! Then women can still report wearing a bra, meeting social constraints and modesty, and support needs, but it would be a lot lighter, cooler, versatile and unrestricting, plus the guys might complain less!

Am I a genius or what?

You mean like Ancient Rome, which devolved into debauchery and decay nearlty 500 years BEFORE the collapse of the Roman Empire. Or England which devolved in debauchery and decay under Henry VIII, and some 400 years later lost their empire.

Debauchery and decay have been going on since there have been humans, you moron.

You are speaking of events in ancient times. Things move much faster today, Honey. Back then, it took years to travel a continent, now it is done in minutes or hours. My parents died in the 1990s but if the were back here today, they would not believe events going on. The decay is accelerating along an exponential curve.

Debauchery and decay have been going on since there have been humans, you moron.
And it is here to stay so long as we have you democrat leftwing radicalized Muslim-loving socialists around.

The modern bra was invented by Mary Phelps Jacob (Caresse Crosby), a New York socialite who patented her "Backless Brassiere" in 1914 after being frustrated with constricting corsets showing through her sheer evening gown. She fashioned it from two handkerchiefs and ribbon for comfort, liberating women from whalebone corsets and leading to the mass-produced bra we know today, though precursors like Herminie Cadolle's split corset existed earlier.

Why it was invented:
  • To replace constricting corsets:
Before the bra, corsets were heavy, stiff, and restricted movement, often poking through modern, lighter fabrics and low-cut dresses.

    • For comfort and practicality:
Jacob's design offered a lighter, more flexible alternative, allowing for freedom of movement, especially for active lifestyles and evolving fashions.
    • Inspired by fashion:
The need for a less visible undergarment for sheer gowns sparked the invention, replacing bulky whalebone
