Other wise they were prepared to fight an invasion of their mainland using civilians as fighters and shields. Not only were the bombs necessary but they deserved them as the Japanese were as bad as the NAZIs in cruelty and abuse of POWs.

Jiro Hito not olny surrendered but became an advocate for American control of Japan which converted them from a fanatical culture to a democratic ally. Only an unconditional surrender made that possible and the bombs were the key
