Should Indigenous Peoples Day f/k/a Columbus Day be a school holiday? Here's my take. If any teachers or students don't want to celebrate the second Monday in October as Columbus Day that's their privilege. Such teachers and students should spend the day, in classes (or at a Native Americans' museum).

They should spend the day as follows:
  1. An hour or two learning about the local tribes;
  2. An hour or two learning about inter-tribal conflict;
  3. An hour learning about the effects of smallpox, typhoid and diphtheria on the tribes;
  4. An hour learning about warfare and treaty breaking by Europeans; and
  5. An hour learning about tribes and conflicts in other areas.
It should not be a holiday because there is nothing to celebrate. OTOH Columbus Day can be a celebration; it's why we are here. And to our Canadian friends, Happy Thanksgiving!

Maybe you missed it, but President Trump reinstated Columbus Day. Learning about American Indians is always a good idea. They were an interesting people.

Do you like my subject division for American Indian instruction?

Indigenous People's Day. We honor the millions of Native Americans who were killed by White Northern Europeans.

Honor what about them? The tribal warfare, the slavery, the savage way they sacrificed people. Is that what you celebrate? Or is it some kumbaya living with nature shit you made up in your head?

This is what most folks think of the plight of NAs.

Then they go about their day.

Both public school districts near me are in session tomorrow regardless of it being Columbus Day. Both of them started their school year in mid-July and have very recently had their 2 weeks of fall break. Getting their butts back in the classroom makes most sense.

Celebrate them both on the same day. Encourage students to dress in explorer costumes and Injun constumes. Just no toplessness, especially the exporers.

A great way to show we are all united regardless of our heritage.

'Cause we'll all stick together,
You can take that to the bank.
That's the cowboys and the hippies,
and the Rebels and the Yanks!

Given the state of "education" in America, more holidays are a more than dubious choice.

It's not "indigenous people's day", it's Columbus Day. We don't celebrate injuns, they're just people, fer Christ's sake. Just like any other people in the US. And no, it shouldn't be a federal holiday. The banks and post offices should be open just like any other day.

If we're going to celebrate Injuns, why not have a "Polish Day", a "Czech Day", or an "Irish Day"?

**** no day off. For every holiday costs go way up, same entitlements

Indigenous People Day is a great idea…. But it needs to be some other day. Columbus Day is to be celebrated by Americans and Italian Americans in particular and not demonized. With the Left, everything needs to be attacked and “fundamentally transformed” when it comes to America and America needs to be punished. If you feel this way about America needing to be punished and fundamentally transformed, please move. Just move. Leave America.its not for you.
