Assuming you made it through at least eighth grade.....let me try to fill you in here on what you missed, starting with the difference between a country (nation) and a continent.
A nation is community of people composed of one or more nationalities and possessing a more or less defined territory and government like The United States of America, the country that you live in.
A continent is usually defined as one of the six or seven great divisions of land on the globe.
Your country is located in North America, a continent.
Your country chares North America with the sovereign nations of Canada and Mexico.
South of North America lies Central America composed of four more sovereign nations or countries. These are Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.
Moving on to the southeast we have yet ANOTHER America, South America consisting of the countries Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname.

Each of the billion or so people living in the nations located on these continents is an "American." Some are North Americans, some Central Americans, and some South Americans.

Living in one of the 50 states that comprise The United States of America does not give you a monopoly on beaing an "American."
You share that title with about a billion other people who speak a number of different languages and come from a huge variety of cultures and customs.
A large percentage of them are Spanish speaking Latin Americans.
