You are mixing up the timelines - Cambodia wasn't China's friend nor ally during the Vietnam war. They just started to get warm in 1971/2 with the Khmer Rouge. And this pissed off North-Vietnam.
China and Russia only started to oppose each other openly after the Vietnam war. Never-mind these Russia-China border clashes in 1969.
Upon 1975 North-Vietnam having taken the South - China and Russia started to be at clear odds, since the Capitalist USA was gone - mostly due to the Nixon-China-Taiwan accord. And China withdrew it's military support to Vietnam.

In 1976/7 Vietnam started it's harassment policy against Chinese-Vietnamese, and in 1979 Vietnam attacked Cambodia and China attacked Vietnam - 3 weeks and everyone withdrew their troops.
