Shohei Ohtani is the Best BB Player Ever

Ohtani looked tired after 6 innings and the Dodgers' manager should have called to the bullpen before Ohtani got into trouble. He had never pitched so long in the regular season and he is not like Yamamoto who pitched two complete games in the postseason. The World Series is tied (2-2) but Toronto has an advantage. The Dodgers must take Game 5 tomorrow.

How do 20-30 year olds get tired? Playing a game? With 20 yrs conditioning and nutrition coaches? Most of baseball is standing around. Almost boring. But in the field you have to be mentally on alert. I guess.

It ain't soccer (run sprints till you drop). Getting kicked and beat up 99 minutes.

I quit watching MLB because of the lack of competitive balance. I would rather watch NFL football because every team is on equal footing.

Strike of 94' sent me away. I limp back in now and then but not like I used too. I used to figure out if player X goes 10 for 22 he will reach 300 by end of year. I was in to it. Media Money and wokeism racism drove me off.

Gambling brings me back
But I dont care who wins too much.

Good news. Big market payroll makes the playoffs but does not always win. That's the best we have.

But they weaken small market teams greatly buying up all the "best" players. The sadden the fans.

Until small market teams are on equal footing with big market teams I will not follow MLB.

Old NL style baseball (before DH and pitching, positioning, throwover rules) in a 7 game series (at the highest level of competition) is still a top level event. Edge of seat excitement.

It's still there but more like slow pitch softball. Less manager options.

The 3 man HR contest could be used to settle long extra inning games? Never say never.

you guys act like every player will go to the higher pay...that aint true....ohtani said in a interview when he made his first appearance as a dodger that angels really never made him an offer...he liked playing here and liked playing with mike trout....

I remember hearing about it. If he was loyal and wanted to stay he would have approached them. Not go to Scott Boras and basically say "bring me the highest best choice offer". Opening up a shark feeding frenzy, yes TOR was deep into it too.

That dog don't hunt Harry. Nice try though.
See maybe Bobby Witt on KC as example what can be done?

I hate the Dodgers being a Phillies fan, but I gotta admit Ohtani is the best player ever. From a land of pretty short people but intelligent people, this guy is a giant to rival Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Willie Mays.

Not including the dopers of course.
He is certainly the best in baseball right now. Because of his two way ability. Definitely worth the $700 million plus unlike Soto… and that’s nothing against Soto. He is great but he is not a two-way player

Ohtani certainly has a chance to be the greatest of all time. He probably is the best athlete(maybe tied with Ovechkin in the NHL) in the four big North American sports currently. But as for all time like surpassing Babe Ruth and even in other sports like Tom Brady, let’s see how many rings he gets. Let’s see his numbers seven years from now.

what the story was about was that the angels owner could have afforded him but didnt try to get him....thats why he would have stayed if they went for him...they have a large Japanese population out there...and he liked living out here no doubt why he went for the dodgers....

Obviously not. Can you imagine any other sport where a season is 162 games, and as much as 184 if you're successful, all in a stretch of about 210 days.

I remember a Czech girl that watched a baseball game in Wrigley field and she described the game thusly: Everyone stands around for about ten minutes, then runs around for a minute and then goes back to standing around again.

To be the greatest of all time, he would need to have a higher batting average than Josh Gibson (.371), or if you prefer to not include black leagues, then Ty Cobb (.367).

If Ohtani hit .400 every year for 10 more years, his career average would be .358.

Realistically, his career average probably won't even top .300. Even if he were to keep hitting about 50 home runs a year for 10 years more (but that woud be asking a lot), still there's no indication that his batting average is going to get much higher.

At best, he'll wind up a great home run hitter, but still mediocre as a hitter generally, similar to guys like Ken Griffey Jr (630 HR; .284) or Jim Thome (612 HRs; .276) This is waaay below Babe Ruth (714 HR; .342)

Let's not forget that Ted Williams (521 HR; .344) lost 5 years of his career to military service in World War 2 & Korea.
And Williams, in his last year, in only 310 at bats (about 50% of a season) hit 29 HRs & 72 RBIs. Extrapolated to a full season of 620 at bats, that comes out to 58 HRs & 144 RBIs (at age 42).

I understand that but Otani is also a superstar pitcher. So let’s see how his ERA holds up for the next 7-10 years or so.

Wrt Ohtanis offense we also need to look at his on base percentage of which was number 4 in the league this year. So let’s see how that progresses throughout his career… but the big thing is even though he is not a Ted Williams or Ichiro type batting average hitter …. The fact that he can be so effective as a pitcher means a lot.

if ruth played in the 30's he wouldnt have looked as impressive as he did in the 20's....to many other power hitters then....and ty cobb played his best years in the dead ball era...big difference in conditions, especially with the ball.....after 1919 things got real different with numbers...

Yeah, the game has changed so much over the years. I mean no one has hit .400 in 70 years.

There is no "if". Before old age got the better of him, Ruth played 4 years in the 1930s, still hitting at top caliber >
  • 1930 - 49 HR, 153 RBIs, .359
  • 1931 - 46 HR, 163 RBIs, .373
  • 1932 - 41 HR, 137 RBIs, .341
  • 1933 - 34 HR, 103 RBIs, .301
Not many hitters can match these numbers, even in their prime.
