You're right, class rank is no indicator of leadership ability, but it will determine how good of a leader they are if they are at least smart enough to learn.

And...as far as being a good pilot? I've kinda got my doubts on that. See.....I was stationed with VFA-131 Wildcats from 90-94, and no matter how frazzled our pilots got, we NEVER lost an aircraft, at least while I was there.

Nope.....I lost all respect for McInsane when he started to pander to Bush Jr. in 2004.

Well, the one thing thats really not taken into consideration here, is the time period in which McCain was flying, and can tell you from experience as I have some overlap in that time with VA-75 , that someone that lost aircraft on a consistant basis due to screwing the pooch were gone. However, the accident rate for "nuggets" back then was a lot higher than it is now. There are many factors I imagine, types of training, aircraft type. etc. One thing to consider here too, an A-4, A-7' and I believe he flew A-1's to , damn sure aint no F-18. I will admit that some in Navy circles who knew McCain personally will tell you he had a reputation as a "hot dog" but from what I know of him directly, he was a damn fine skipper. I can see though, if you believe in somene though and they change their minds on something thats fundemental to you it would tend to make you lose respect for them though. I just see it a little different is all Sailor.

We had a hotdog in our squadron callsign "Snatch". And, it wasn't because he got a lot of tail, it was because when he was still an FNG, he went down to Key West for ACM training. He won the dogfight, but, in the process of coming around on his 6, he pulled a 9.5g in the FA-18. The plane came back with panels falling off. Skipper was pissed and told him that if he ever snatched a stick outta the cockpit like that again, he would be sent away.

From then on, we called him Snatch.

Hotdogs are good for some things, but, just like Maverick in Top Gun, hotdoging will get you in trouble.

Yet another reason I don't trust McCain.

They reveal their true colors then because no one would say these kinds of things about ANY black or woman unless they were a real racist and woman hater anyway. But then hypocritically turn around and insist their party is the party that stands up for blacks and women. They mean they will ONLY if that black or woman has the right political beliefs of course. I'm sorry , I was *laughing* I just got this mental image of this FNG climbing out of that cockpit. I can see your point, but I would hardly conside McCain someone like Maverick which was great entertainment, good for a laugh or two. Especially the T-38's made out to be MIG's. All I have to go on is what I hear from the aviation community and he has a decent reputation. He did a damn good job with VA-174 which was in pretty bad shape before he took over. Here is something to consider too, here's a guy that had both of his arms completely broken , so he cannot lift them over his head. but yet came back, went through physical therapy, and requalified on the A-7 which to me say's a lot about the man. However, like I said earlier, I can see where someone that has a bad reputation for auguring in aircraft though can be seen as "unfit" . I can tell you as a "BN" I sure as hell didn't want a left seat throttle jockey who didn't couldn't see straight.
