"Amid a dangerous heatwave that has brought blistering temperatures across Texas, the state’s governor signed a law this week eliminating local rules requiring water breaks for workers. The measure, which will take effect later this year, will nullify ordinances enacted by Austin and Dallas that mandate 10-minute breaks for construction workers every four hours. It also prevents any other local governments from passing similar worker protections. ust days after Greg Abbott, the governor, ratified the law, officials said a 35-year-old utility lineman working to restore power in Marshall, Texas, died after experiencing symptoms of heat illness.

“Banning required rest breaks for construction workers in the Texas heat is deadly.” wrote the Texas branch of the AFL-CIO union. Six out of every 10 construction workers in Texas are Latino, Hispanic workers made up a third of all worker heat deaths since 2010, according to an NPR/Columbia study. Still, the Republican lawmakers pushing the new law have said it eliminates a “hodgepodge of onerous and burdensome regulations” that Texas businesses face."

I would assume forcing employers to give their workers 10 minute water breaks, every four hours is probably the greatest manifestation of Communist-Marxist government oppression in at least the last 50 or more years...probably not since the creation of the 40-hr work week has there been a more anti-American, anti-worker regulation put in place. Furthermore, wetbacks, especially the darker illegal looking ones are better suited to deal with the heat, with minimal amount of water breaks...So why do we need big government to force businesses to make it easier on these illegals? If more of them die, maybe that is a good thing...it means less of them will be here, raping and murdering our citizens...and maybe more of them will go back to where they came from....I for one would have a lot more sympathy towards improving working conditions for construction workers if so many of them were not wetbacks and other people I don't empathize with.

However, the question needs to be asked....are water breaks communist? I am not saying all water breaks are communist, but employers should be free to mandate water breaks however they see fit...if an employer refuses to give their employees a fair amount of break time; then those workers should organize, I mean, they should just quit and find an employer who will give them water breaks...this isn't something that we need to regulate on businesses...the free market will do what is right as it has always done...How do you think we have OSHA laws?

I don't know how anybody can be surprised by the conservative voter's urge to increase misery in the world

It's undeniably socialist in intent.

This too will relate to America's decline in life expectancy. You can't have fascism and expect to compete with China, Russia, and the rest of the Brics.

So water breaks are fascist too? Wow...didn't know that.....

How do we fight back against this scourge of communist-fascist-marxist-socialist-and other ists water breaks?

I would be perfectly happy with any Texas construction workers that suffered heat injury, getting a lawyer and suing the crap out of employers that did not not extend water breaks and did not have a policy for workplace safety in a heat environment. Might be a good way for employees to become company owners, and more productive in the economy.

True....but I think an easier solution would be to not limit their water breaks...seems less "Deathly" and stuff

Freedom to Canadians is 'not' having to suffer the consequences first and then turn to the law for relief.

Do you understand that? Your words seem to indicate that you don't.

But then I know from experience that you most likely would understand!

The whole discussion i kneejerk extremist nonsense!

recourse via lawsuit is limited by damage limitations in Texas, the large percentage of workers who are not legal, and texas being a right to work state.

Going to be 106 in Austin today.

I live in Austin now..and yes, it is hot hot.....

I have the utmost respect for anyone who has to work outside in this kind of heat...and them having a 10 minute water break every 4 hours isn't Communism to me

How do people who claim to be against big government use it to tell a smaller government what to do?

You aren't understanding that taking away water breaks is fascism against workers. Think of it as the opposite of 'social' responsibility of an employer toward their workers. Socialism!

You can also choose to think of it as 'communist' in that mandatory water breaks is 'dictating' safety and health requirements to the employer.

Canada chooses the former.

Oh ok, I was mistaken....I stand corrected

No, I'm not buying this tine my friend.

We've settled on that being wrong and we don't need to revisit the reason why. I as a Canadian would not be perfectly happy with that!

In any case, I think we can write the whole thing off as nonsense.

So, you are against having water breaks required and against workers suing if injured on the job by neglect of supervision?
I guess it will be up to the courts, if workers take legal action. Then it will be up to a judge.

I had an apartment wall framing crew from '79-85, rah cheer in the Heart of DFW. You have breaks, but you have water all of the time. It's called survival.

Water breaks are surely a perk for the achievers in this world. So, for example, a Governer working in an air conditioned palatial office should be free to sip ice cold water from a mountain spring at any time it suits.

Humble artisans have not earned that privilege.. Maybe their unions should have given Gov Abbott a big cheque ?
