Seniors and the Stimulus

The law is clear. IF Social Security is you sole source of income, it's tax free. You don't file a tax return. If you receive other money, your Social Security benefits can then become taxable if that money AND your Social Security combined go over statutory limits. Social Security ain't income until you get outside income... then it's income.
What about Civil Service?

I don't about taxes for civil service employees, but if you had money not taxable coming in, it's probably going to be subject to taxes. Put simply, a disability check from Uncle Scam is not taxable provided it is your only source of money coming in. The stimulus checks will be taxable; therefore, the money you used to get that was not taxable WILL BE included as taxable income due to the stimulus package UNLESS Congress makes special considerations for it. Once Trump sends out the money, the tax part rests solely with the IRS and they don't even answer to God,.

I'n not keeping up, but Donald Trump wants to "give" every American $1000 to $2000. I don't know if this is abject stupidity OR just misapplied good intentions.

MILLIONS of people live on Social Security or Social Security Disability. If their only source of money coming in is their Social Security or Disability check, it is not income and they don't even have to file an income tax return (at least the people I know don't.) Now here is the problem:

The moment you get outside income, Social Security and Social Security Disability become "income." Since this stimulus will be handled by the IRS, they will label it income. Social Security and Disability checks will be taxable... including the stimulus. So, next year when the seniors fill out their tax forms, they will owe taxes... maybe more than what they got in the stimulus. So, they are going to be pretty well screwed. I spoke with some guy named "Kyle" in Senator David Perdue's Washington D.C. office and we had a long talk about it today. He even said seniors could not refuse the stimulus.

If seniors find out about this before the election, Joe Biden is your next president.
My buddy on disability just came over and purchased $100 in weed. He got a $1200 check from the government. He can't believe it. I can't believe it. My retired dad doesn't think he's going to get anything. Is he?

Neither of them should get anything. They're lives haven't changed one bit. Why would the gov send them money because it's an election year?

And why are they giving people on unemployment $500 a week more than the norm? Why are people being laid off now getting more than they gave me 6 years ago when I lost my job? It's not right.

I shouldn't get any money, should I? I'm working. But I guess I'm only getting 80% right now so even I'm hurting too supposedly. But I should only get a very little stimulus if I'm making 80% of my pay. But I guess the gov doesn't have time to figure it all out. They're just throwing money at the problem. Inflation will come right?

It's just a huge mess any way you look at it. People like me are getting money we don't need. People with young kids are getting $500 per child but people providing for older kids or dependent adults get nothing. And all this money is just a big bill that we are passing along to the next generation to pay.

My observation is that due to technology, things happen at a much faster rate than they did 100 years ago. When influenza killed 675,000 Americans and as many as 50 million people world wide nearly a century ago, things finally went down hill and we had the Great Depression. Back then people were self sufficient. It took a decade to break everyone. This time, it will only take months once the Santa Claus money dries up.

That's been my whole point on this thread. The cost will be far greater than the $1200 some of us will be getting. Government cannot give you anything without taking it from you first. Then they expect to be paid for handling the transaction.

Maybe the IRS will tax you on your stimulus income, but it’s hard to imagine they are going to tax you on your benefits as well. I think you’re misinformed

I was saying before the virus that the government would create a crisis and use it to cut social security 20%. If Republicans win this year you can expect major cuts to ss and medicare.

Well it used to be that they took from the rich and corporations but since they don't pay taxes anymore, I guess you are correct. We will have to pay all this money back.

That is it. I have NO factual information outside what I know. I know that if you have outside income of any kind, the IRS taxes your Socialist Security. If your Socialist Security is your only source of income, you do not have to file an income tax return. They do not withhold taxes on Socialist Security. They say the stimulus money is not taxable, but that still leaves that question. Because you got any kind of money, will the IRS then say you money coming other than Socialist Security and force you to pay income tax on this year's Socialist Security? Without a definitive answer, we are speculating unless someone knows something that I haven't been able to find the answer to.

Presuming you're right, what old people are not taken out by the Corona virus may as well commit suicide. The company where I worked had entry level jobs that started at $10 to $11 an hour. Now, those jobs are starting at $14 to $15 - these are the entry level, no experience required jobs. With people making more, once this Corona scare is over, business will raise the price of products and services to reflect the wage increases we're seeing. Add price increases to a decrease in SS - I don't have to say anything else.
