Selma 50 yr anniversary thread

Those who marched in Selma were true American patriots......on par with our founding fathers

why isn't Obama out doing community work like repairing some buildings or something, instead of out GRANDSTANDING ?

isn't that what they said about 9/11?

He can't attend anything for our vets, make to France to show solidarity against terrorist, etc. in fact he shuts down our vets memorials when he gets all bent over not getting his way.... but he can hustle out for this

He ruins the day for me. so way to go

Why wouldn't Obama celebrate a great moment in American history?

Selma is more significant than the Boston Tea Party that the right is always talking about

President Barack Obama told thousands who gathered in Selma, Alabama, for the 50th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday" that "the Americans who crossed this bridge, they were not physically imposing, but they gave courage to millions. They held no elected office. But they led a nation. "

No wonder Repub leadership aren't attending

Echoes of Selma
Yet less is known about the long-term campaign that was launched against the Voting Rights Act just weeks after its passage. That campaign culminated in 2013 when a conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court dismantled the law's most effective weapon against racial discrimination in voting.

The court's decision -- in Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder -- spawned the most systematic effort to restrict voting since the rise of Jim Crow segregation in the late 19th century, says Ari Berman, a voting rights expert and a writer for The Nation magazine.

Our March Is Not Yet Finished Obama Says on 50th Anniversary of Selma - NBC News
Americans must continue to embrace the message of the civil rights movement, President Obama told a crowd of thousands Saturday, speaking from a site he said symbolized "the daring of America's character."

In a speech at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, where 50 years ago, police beat and tear-gassed protesters, Obama issued his call to action.

"Fifty years from Bloody Sunday, our march is not yet finished. But we are getting closer," he said.

How many of the marchers over that bridge could have imagined that a black President would be commemorating what they did on that day?

They are the ones that helped make it happen

Yo, I see the "Socialist Progressive Democrats" are celebrating what the Democrats did 50 years ago? Beat the HELL out of Blacks!!! Congressman John Lewis remembers "Bloody Sunday" and the KKK Democrats, like it was yesterday!!! Yes, Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1963 said this: "These Negroes, they're getting pretty uppity these days and that's a problem for us since they've got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we've got to do something about this, we've got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference... I'll have them ******* voting Democratic for the next two hundred years". Then a few years later, they got too uppity? Governor George Wallace, another Democrat, said he would not protect those Blacks! So there you have it!

It was conservatives who delivered the beatings

Most of the marchers were Democrats

Selma Civil Rights Milestone Marked By First Black President
SELMA, Ala. (AP) -- America's racial history "still casts its long shadow upon us," the nation's first black president said Saturday as he stood in solidarity and remembrance with civil rights activists whose beatings by police a half-century ago galvanized people against racial oppression and hastened passage of historic voting rights for minorities.

Ah good. Two undocumented alien quotes. Seen 'em before. Steve McRacist gone lynch your ass -- he had 'em first.
I like how you put a made-up date on the one. Nice touch.
