The question to me would rather be, how is it possible (unintentionally) for an American made F-18 using e.g. link 14 or link 16 and integrated IFF systems, to fire an American made AAM missile onto another allied US made and operated aircraft. A Lt.Col or a Full Colonel is not a common rank to accompany missions in an F-15E or e.g. a B-1 - but they do.
