US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin addressed recent Chinese military advancements Saturday, including the test of a hypersonic weapon system and strengthening of nuclear capabilities, saying, "America isn't a country that fears competition."

During the Reagan National Defense Forum's keynote address, Austin said the US is ready to face China's military rise and is working to "support Taiwan's ability to defend itself" while "not seeking an Asian version of NATO or trying to build an anti-China coalition."

"We're facing a formidable challenge," the defense chief said of China at the event. "And we're going to meet this one with confidence and resolve -- not panic and pessimism."

Austin joined other top leaders in the defense industry to express the importance of strengthening ties between the US and allied nations, sounding the alarm on the threat China and Russia pose, as both nations continue to build up aggressive defenses not seen since World War II.

Hypersonic weapons are not quite what people think they are.

Yes, it goes fast. They are also less accurate, larger, only a fraction as maneuverable as slower weapons, and are easier to detect. And while they do reach their target faster, they are really no more difficult to intercept than other weapons.

We had Mach 3+ drones way back in the 1960's. There are many reasons why the US never really invested much in this, and mostly concentrated on defensive systems.

The Soviet Union had Mach 4.5 anti-ship missiles sixty years ago. (Kh-22, NATO reporting name AS-4 Kitchen) It's NOT new.

I hope he is speaking in different terms privately.

China just launched a hypersonic missile last month that circled the entire globe.
Everyone was caught off guard including NATO and the United States. That was more than a shot across the bow. Austin needs to get back to what's important putting skirts on military men! Once that's done everything will be okay!
