Abstract
To whom should a male directs his mating? While it is a critical social interaction, little is known about molecular and cellular mechanisms controlling mammalian sexual preference. Here we report that the neurotransmitter 5-HT is required for male sexual preference. Male mice lacking central serotonergic neurons lost sexual preference but were not generally defective in olfaction. A role for 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was demonstrated by the phenotype of mice unable to synthesize 5-HT in the brain when lacking tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (Tph2). 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) injection rescued the phenotype of adult Tph2 knockout mice within 35 minutes. These results indicate that 5-HT and serotonergic neurons in the adult brain regulate mammalian sexual preference

A Perspective on Changes in the Atmosphere
Paleoclimatology also puts recent changes in the atmosphere and climate into perspective. For example, gas bubbles trapped in ice cores tell us that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are now significantly higher than they have been over at least the last 800,000 years.

A Perspective on Global Temperature
Paleoclimate records from multiple proxies also indicate that global temperatures, which have risen with atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, are now higher than at any point in the last 1,500 years. Our planet has likely not been as warm as it is today since over 5,000 years, when changes in Earth’s orbit increased temperature in some parts of the world.
What is especially remarkable is that the long-term cooling trend that has existed over the past 5,000 or more years has reversed abruptly. And, global temperatures have risen from the coldest to near the warmest levels of our current interglacial period within the last century

Since the 1970s, paleoclimatologists have developed methods for reconstructing temperatures over the last 2,000 years based on a broad range of proxy data types. While some differences between these records may be due to their using a variety of statistical methods, they show similar patterns of temperature variability over the last 2,000 years.

This natural warming was caused by slow changes in the Earth’s orbit, which caused shifts in the amount of solar radiation reaching each latitudinal band of the planet. Changes in the Earth’s orbit also caused warming in the Penultimate Interglacial Period about 125,000 years ago. Based on proxy evidence, the global mean annual surface temperature appeared to be higher than pre-industrial by about 1° to 2°C, but this warming was not uniform across the globe. However, this slowly varying climate forcing mechanism cannot be responsible for warming over the last 100 years.
The Early Eocene Period, about 54 to 48 million years ago, stands out as distinctly warmer than today, particularly at high latitudes. The global surface temperature was 9° to 14°C higher than today, and carbon dioxide levels were very high, between 1,000 to 2,000 parts per million (levels in 2021 were 414.27 parts per million). Scientists think that increased volcanic activity was an important cause of these high levels of carbon dioxide. Model simulations support the hypothesis that carbon dioxide concentrations maintained high temperatures in the early Eocene

The air pressure at the top of atmosphere is not very high. 95000 tons would cause a gas cloud thousands of cubic miles in size at that pressure.
