School Threatens to Ruin Valedictorian’s Naval Academy Appt.

Oh goody, more imaginary persecution

Friends and classmates were also baffled, but the school said it cut Reimer off because he didn't give the same speech he had submitted to the school beforehand. Religion had nothing to do with it, the school said. The graduation ceremony concluded with a prayer.

School Threatens to Ruin Valedictorian’s Naval Academy Appt.
A Texas high school principal threatened to sabotage a valedictorian’s appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy after the student delivered a speech that referenced God and the U.S. Constitution, the boy’s attorney alleges.

Hiram Sasser, director of litigation with the Liberty Institute, said Joshua High School principal Mick Cochran threatened to write a letter to the U.S. Naval Academy disparaging the character of Remington Reimer.

“It was intimidating having my high school principal threaten my future because I wanted to stand up for the Constitution and acknowledge my faith and not simply read a government approved speech, the teenager said.

--

“Specifically, he threatened to send a letter to the United States Naval Academy advising them that Remington has poor character or words to that effect,” Sasser told Fox News.

After consulting with a school attorney, the principal temporarily retracted the threat, Sasser said.

“The principal said he wanted to try to ruin him for what he did – for talking about the Constitution and his faith,” Sasser said. “I don’t know if he’s going to be able to continue to be the principal of that school.”

Principal Little Bitch is a prick.

If that was me, that douche would have had to talk to a lawyer to see how much he could sue my dad for over all the missing teeth.

If it was my son, I'd have choked that fuck out.

As it is, I suggest the parents ban together and get that useless America hating fuck out.

You envision the principal to be someone who won't just kick your loud-mouthed ass, I assume.

Internet tough guy.

Naval Academy huh?

Where you are supposed to follow instructions without question? And he can't even deliver the valedictorian speech he agreed to give?

Not Naval Academy material

The OP is obviously as ignorant of the Constitution and its case law as the teenager, the latter of which at least has an excuse.

No right is absolute, including rights enshrined in the First Amendment. Government is allowed to place reasonable restrictions on the exercising of one’s rights.

In this case, schools have the right to control the content of official speech, such as an address during a graduation ceremony. See: Morse v. Frederick (2007).

Freedom of speech. Who gets off telling people to use pre-approved speeches here in America? Good for this guy. This principal needs to be schooled on constitutional ethics.

I really hate to throw a wet rag on this but...

It is not uncommon for the speeches read by Students at their High School Graduation to be pre-read by the school and "approved".

They are still under the School's authority until they have left the school property for the very last time. That is why so many schools don't hand out the actual diploma, but a blank sheet of paper. They have been known to withhold issuing that diploma up to the day before the next school year officially starts for misbehavior at the ceremony itself.

Yeah... this isn't the first story like this one I've seen recently. Censoring the student speakers at high school graduations appears to be commonplace.

Of course, when I remember the speech given by the valedictorian in my sisters class after he planted a set of Micky Mouse ears on the noggin of the principal, I reckon I can dig it, even if it does rub me the wrong way on principle.

Do you have any evidence the school is ‘lying.’

Otherwise, the school was well within its rights to end the speech. The student should have delivered the speech he agreed to deliver, and was compelled to have the approval of the school regarding any changes.

The kid is not Naval Academy material

If he can't hack it giving a speech he agreed to give , he won't hack it as a Midshipman. Something about an honor code

Wow. Just because a white trash nutball clown like Daveboy supports the kid doesn't mean the kid is wrong.

The school's standard isn't anything like an Academy code, e.g., USMA's "A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do." Without going into detail I am laughing out loud at the idea an Academy quality person isn't going to do the right thing under pressure. To the contrary.

In this case the right thing to do was to force the issue.

Yes, because we DAMN sure don't want kids thinking for themselves, do we?

And by "we", I mean "you".

No. Schools didn't get the right to suppress free speech with Morse.

They got the legal right to TRY to suppress free speech.

Let's hope the kid overcomes mindless nutball support like the op, keeps his head and his principled stand - something entirely foreign to the nutball scum of the earth - jumpstarts something good among young folks, like thoughtful civil disobedience.
