Over the years, scientists have gathered enough fossils and samples to tell the world about the kind of creatures from ancient times. Even though they are currently extinct, a long time ago these verified creatures roamed the earth. Here is a list of some terrifying prehistoric creatures.

Arthropleura
Arthropleura was a giant centipede-like arthropod that lived in North America and Scotland around 340 to 290 million years ago. It grew to the size of a man. This species is believed to have mostly lived on land , in a forest environment, but may also have been capable of travelling under water. Some scientists even believe that it may have returned to lakes or rivers in order to moult and grow a new shell. No fossil mouth parts of Arthropleura have ever been found, so it is not entirely clear what it ate.

Saber-toothed Tiger
The Saber-toothed tiger, or smilodon is one of the most popular prehistoric mammals that once lived in North and South America. Despite its name, saber-toothed tiger was not related to the tiger or other modern cats. They had thick legs and a short tail but it is best known by its large curved canine teeth and lived in shrubby grasslands. It was a carnivore and may have preyed upon animals as large as mastodons. As a result of climate changes and lack of food, saber-toothed tiger vanished from the planet at the end of the Ice Age around 10.000 years ago.

These ancient creatures may be scary to look at to modern eyes- but they were just part of the fauna back then and not scary to their contemporaries.

The fact that they all died out is proof that they were in no ways invincible.

10,000 years ago, human hunting parties may have had something to do with the disappearance of the Saber-toothed tiger who ate one too many human infants. Just sayin'.

Scary Prehistoric creatures, eh?

Not all of them are extinct yet.

Hard to believe it but the common chicken evolved from the dinosaur. If you see them outside the coop and foraging you might get a hint. I watched two chickens flush out a mouse and chase it down and tear it apart. If you have ever been harassed by a rooster with those long spikes on their legs you get the idea.
