I found it inspiring. There will be those that will find it crude with a lot of vulgarity and there is.

Mel Gibsons interview you take from it is they didn't want to "PREACH TO THE CHOIR" so to speak.

Like The Passion Mel Gibson wanted to show the actual suffering, rather than the sterilized version with this notion of love, sunshine and rainbows certain people SELL about the life, death and resurrection.

BTW, if anyone saw the graphics of exactly what Christ suffered in His Passion based on the Shroud.....

Anyway, it's a recommended movie for those that can handle vulgarity and real life issues. I always preferred straight whiskey over some fruity drink anyway. That's my take.

This is by far Wahlberg's best performance.
Not that I thought he wasn't a very good actor, but I didn't know he had this in him.
We thought the movie was going to be another Wahlberg goofy comedy. The trailer makes it seem like that for sure.
It is not.
It does hold onto a comedic edge throughout the film, but it is not a comedy. It is a story about a very unlikely person becoming a priest. It is about redemption, and forgiveness. Therefore - of course, Rotten Tomatoes hated it. If there is a hint of religion in a film, RT will score it low virtually every time.

The dialogue writing isn't exactly stellar. Situations aren't always believable. But Wahlberg's performance keeps you watching.

Mel likes to see men being tortured... he's kind of a weirdo like that.

I agree. He's always had a fetish for torture. Remember when he played Wallace the long scene where he was drawn and quartered?

I do.

I also remember "Snuff Film of the Christ"... which is a big chunk of Torture Porn masquarading as religion.

The best thing ever said in response was South Park, "The important thing about Jesus is what he said, not how he died. Focusing on how he died is what they did in the Dark Ages and it had really bad results."

There was also "Apocolyto", that bizarre film about Mayan human sacrifice that was kind of weird to watch.
