1920's Prohibition

"During Prohibition, the manufacture, transportation, import, export, and sale of alcoholic beverages were restricted or illegal. Prohibition was supposed to lower crime and corruption, reduce social problems, lower taxes needed to support prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene in America. Instead, Alcohol became more dangerous to consume; organized crime blossomed; courts and prisons systems became overloaded; and endemic corruption of police and public officials occurred."

Same claims being used to oppose marijuana legalization. Ironically enough, much of the opposition to marijuana is from the alcohol industry who views its legalization as competition to their products. Which of course it is.

The odd thing about the alcohol prohibitionists is - they were right. Everything they predicted, the worst cases, all happened. From the breakdown of families because of alcoholism to an increase in underage drinking. It all happened. We just don't think it's so bad.
