The Board of Education decided in an emergency meeting Tuesday to lower the passing grade on the writing portion of Florida's standardized test after preliminary results showed a drastic drop in student passing scores.

A similar thing happened in the system in which I teach. Students formerly had to score a 93 to get an A. Some parents complained that it was too difficult for Little Precious to get an A and demanded that the grading scale be changed to a 10 point scale. The school board complied and now more Little Johnnies can get an A. It is another example of re-distribution.

I was watching a news bit about our current education issues here in Florida where they were showing an elementary school that receives good grades. They showed this kid and he said right on TV:

"I've been on the Honor Roll 4 times! Without my teacher, I wouldn't know nothing!"

You cannot make up stuff like that.

The FCAT sucks. It's a problem with the test, not the students. You don't go from an 80% pass rate to a 33% pass rate in one year because suddenly everyone got stupid.

I am not sure of that as my wife has taught math since forever and each says and other agree the students are dumber and lazier. Not all but too many. Some teach the test but the tests change and students have more important things to do after school: sports. Millions of dollars await them round the corner.

Have you noticed the oil companies now have ads on TV about improving our educational system and grades? I can't figure out yet if it is another one of these propaganda efforts to create a mindset that oil companies are wonderful citizens or are they just cynical conspirators? But this is America folks and Americans worship money, sports, and fantasy. Oh and cheap junk from China from that other worshiped item, the market.

So much rides on test outcomes that classroom curriculums have been narrowed to a kind of perpetual test preparation. And test taking. The Fort Myers News-Press, looking at the state’s mandatory testing regime, counted 27 standardized tests that eighth-grade students were required to jam into this school year. Students, teachers, principals, administrators, superintendents, even school board members, all know they’re judged by the outcomes of tests.

Yet the state superintendent, the state board of education and NCS Pearson, the giant testing corporation with a four-year, $254 million contract to administer the state’s standardized test regime, seem to suffer no such accountability. Their competence, their proficiency under pressure has been tested this school year. They flunked and flunked spectacularly.
