Russia: We must have veto power over Ukraine security guarantees
Russia will only agree to security guarantees for Ukraine if it has the power to veto them, its foreign minister has said.
Russia will only agree to security guarantees for Ukraine if it has the power to veto them, its foreign minister has said.
Sergei Lavrov said that any attempt to bolster Ukrainian security that did not involve Moscow was a “road to nowhere” and “will not work”.
Mr Lavrov said a “very good example” of a potential blueprint could be found in the Istanbul framework of 2022.
Under a draft discussed at the time, Ukraine would have received guarantees from a group of countries including the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – China, Russia, the United States, Britain and France.
Kyiv rejected the proposal as it would have given Moscow veto power over its national security.
On Tuesday, Donald Trump ruled out putting American boots on the ground once a peace deal is signed, but instead suggested the US was prepared to provide air support to police Ukraine’s skies.
Mr Trump told Fox News: “When it comes to security, they’re [Europe] willing to put people on the ground.”

‘No limitations’ should be put on Ukraine
Last week, Sir Keir Starmer and his European counterparts said “no limitations should be placed on Ukraine’s armed forces or its cooperation with third countries.”
It comes amid reports that about 10 European countries are ready to send forces to Ukraine as part of security guarantees for the country following a peace deal.

On Tuesday, European officials fleshed out the plan to send a multinational “reassurance force” to deter future Russian aggression and now await Mr Trump’s approval, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The first stage would see European troops – including hundreds of British and French soldiers – being stationed in Ukraine, away from the front line, to help its military with training and reinforcements.

It comes as Polish officials claimed a Russian drone crashed in a field in eastern Poland on Wednesday, in what Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland’s defence minister, called a “provocation” from the Kremlin.
The drone hit and scorched a cornfield in the village of Osiny in the eastern Lublin province overnight, just over 62 miles from the Ukrainian border and around 90 km from Belarus, according to early findings, Polish officials said.
Poland has been on high alert for objects entering its airspace since a stray Ukrainian missile struck a southern Polish village in 2022, killing two people.
Commentary:
These are clearly irreconcilable differences. The people of the Ukraine would never go for this.
This shows Putin’s intensions all along, going back to 2014 and before, that he wanted full control of Ukraine and that Yanukovych was his *****. Putin is not serious about ending the war.
This is not logical. We are supposed to give Russia the veto power over whether Russia is invading Ukraine again?
Walk away. Sell more arms. Bomb pipelines, financially destroy the Russian economy and give the Ukrainians the ability to do to Russia as the Russians are doing to them. Start bombing their cities and population.
There's no reason for the Ukrainians to give up because the violence won't end: if Russia takes over or a Russian puppet is installed, every current politician and army member will be murdered or jailed and tortured.
Counter proposal to Putin through Lavrov is as follows:
Opening gambit: Is Russian prepared to give up all the land it has conquered including the Crimea in return for this agreement?
