When did Kazahkstan secede from Russia? Or were they separate forever? All the maps I've seen have both nations seperated, but in the game Superpower, they are combined, and that game is set in 1998. Anybody have any info on this?

When the USSR disintegrated in 1991, Kazakhstan became an independent country. The Russian Federation and Kazakhstan have “coordinated military-technical policy, including the financing of coordinated defense programs.” This may be why the “Superpower” game does not differentiate between the two countries. http://www.kazembassy.ru/eng/kazrusdocs.html

"Kazakhstan was part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from 1922 until December 1991, when it became independent. The republic has maintained a presidential system of government since independence. In 1995 Kazakhstan adopted a new constitution that granted extensive powers to the president.” Microsoft Encarta

Here is an interesting website about a farmer from central Kazakhstan who also raises falcons: http://www.pmicro.kz/~falcon/falcon_e/

Thank you. Maybe the Superpower game makers wanted Russia to have a foothold on other countries around tha Kaz area. Thanks for the info.

Kazakhstan is also in possession of Baikonur (Star City) and several other immovable once Soviet military and space installations which the Russians weren't willing to completely part with after the dissolution. As a result the Russians lease large swaths of Kazakh territory.

Ah, that could be it. In the game, there is a city/base on the corner of a body of water (I wanna say the Black Sea?) in real Kazakhstan. The city has a stockpile of strategic missiles, so that could be it.
