Flint, Michigan is What Happens When You Run Government Like a Business...
Thom Hartmann
Jan. 28, 2016

Republicans love to say we need to run government like a business. But, we only need to look to Flint, Michigan to see how that works out for our fellow citizens.

Thanks to the work of Rick Snyder and his team of little dictators – aka “Emergency Managers” - the people of Flint have been drinking and bathing in contaminated water for more than a year. And, Governor Snyder's decision to put money ahead of safety has left people with no access to clean water, and news that just keeps adding insult to their injuries.

First, residents learned that their complaints about brown, abrasive, nauseating water were ignored by state officials, and that water quality tests were manipulated to show lower levels of lead and other toxins.

Next, as if being ignored wasn't enough to anger Michiganders, next they learned that the whole disaster could have been avoided if city officials were not instructed to stop treating the water with an anti-corrosion chemical that only cost about $100 bucks a day. Instead, residents are stuck with toxic water and the state of Michigan will now have to spend tens of millions of dollars cleaning up the disaster in Flint.

To top all of that off, now residents are learning that the corrosive Flint River water that left their water full of lead and toxins has damaged their homes, plumbing, and water heaters, and they're still questioning whether Snyder and his cronies will help cover the cost of those repairs.

This is what happens when you run government like a business, and you concern yourself with short term costs instead of what's best for people in the long run.

Rick Snyder appointed little dictators in Michigan who never had to be accountable to Michigan voters – and so, they didn't consider – or they didn't care – how the people of Michigan would be harmed by their decisions.

<snip>

Rick Snyder was wrong to thwart democracy and install emergency managers in cities like Flint, and it's time for him to be held responsible. For the people of Flint, let's help get Snyder out of office and get busy fixing the disaster that he created.

Had government been run more like a business, the elected government of Flint would not have run the city into financial insolvency, which was the catalyst that left the city in such dire straits that it required an emergency manager in the first place.

That's what happens when you run government like the Mafia. It's uncanny how all government resembles the Mafia. Any business would have had everyone involved locked up and the business would have been sued into bankruptcy.

A business spends money on r&d and if they can expands in other areas. A business understands that investment is a important part of success.
Aren't you the ones who claims that no R&D would get done without the government doing it?

40% of it is done by the government. I never said that businesses don't play a role in r&d...That would be flat out wrong.

I disagree.

The base role for business is to maximize profits, minimize costs and do anything it can to eliminate or absorb competition for those profits.

The base role for government is to educate the populace, keep the populace secure, and build and maintain shared infrastructure while managing necessary industry where there is not enough profit to attract businesses, such as water service.

'Business' and 'Government' are tools.

Monkeys are born to use tools.

The sooner Monkeys learn when and where to use a screwdriver instead of a hammer, the sooner Monkeys will dance among the stars.

Right, the government does research to see how fast a shrimp can run on a treadmill.

Lol,

The government maintains 99% of our meteorological infrastructure, USGS, CDC, FDA and EPA that makes sure we have clean air, water and food.

The government invests tens of billions into lab science in our colleges which allows our college system to be the best on earth...This wouldn't happen without it, no fucking way.

You bitch about Obama attempting to destroy America's leadership in the world but what do you do? You fight to do exactly what you accuse him of doing.

One fantastic use of the tool called 'government' is obtaining, verifying and maintaining information data bases.

Education and the R&D that is naturally driven by quality education should be at the top of our communal investment list.

If government didn't provide free meteorological data, then private businesses would have to do it themselves. Many industries require weather information that is as exact as possible. Industries like agriculture and the airlines.

The CDC pumps out lies and propaganda. So does the EPA. It pays groups like the American Lung Association to do bogus studies that justify vast increase in its power and budget. The FDA simply isn't necessary. Drug companies that put dangerous drugs on the market will get sued into oblivion. Dow Corning went bankrupt because of bogus claims about the safety of its breast implants. All you have to do to know that drug companies are constantly being sued is watch TV and notice all the commercials by law firms looking for litigants against drug companies. I'm sure you've seen their tag line "1-800-BAD-DRUG."

Government is destroying this country. It's not a benefit of any kind.

The 'business' wouldn't have fired anyone. The 'business' is a piece of paper promising to adhere to certain tax laws.

The people running the business would have fired corrupt and inept management.

Do The People of Flint, MI bear ANY responsibility for what happened to them?

Let's analyze your definition.

The base role for business is to maximize profits, minimize costs and do anything it can to eliminate or absorb competition for those profits.
Maximize profits and minimize loss --- get the most out of each tax dollar spent.

Eliminate or absorb competition for those profits --- find ways to be more efficient while still accomplishing the mission satisfactorily.

That sounds like a pretty good plan to me.
