As everyone breathes a sigh of relief that a civil war didn't take place and no one overthrew the state government of Virginia, there has been lots of talk about the black gun rights advocates -- they were treated like celebrities -- like it was so shocking to everyone that black folks support gun rights -- as they should, since most of the early gun control measures were rooted in racism...but when their rights were being taken away -- I don't remember any of these right wing militia types showing up to defend them.....I wonder why...

"I think it’s been pretty important for us to focus on the fact that gun control in America has a legacy of racist enforcement,” Seven Hills spokesperson James told Vice, 'like taking guns away from black people, because black people were perceived as a threat to property and the sanctity of the state. Several leftist gun rights groups have formed in response to the election of President Trump. This includes Redneck Revolt, which was established in 2016, and the Socialist Rifle Association, which was formed in 2018 and has chapters in all 50 states."

This is why Robert Williams should be a household name if you are truly for the 2A rights of EVERYONE, ALL THE TIME -- and not when you need to use the full civil rights of black folks as a prop....Simply put, the tradition of armed self-defense in black American history; cannot be disconnected from the successes of what we remember as the nonviolent civil rights movement...Hell, even MLK had a house full of guns -- you would too if you were black down south asserting your rights -- W E B DuBois wrote after the 1906 Atlanta massacre: "If a white mob had stepped on the campus where I lived I would without hesitation have sprayed their guts over the grass." -- and why shouldn't he have that right to self defense?? but anytime black folks used their constitutional rights to defend and/or defeat racist attacks back then, someone in power got triggered...

Black folks couldn't rely on the police departments and courts for their protection, they were routinely raped beaten and murdered with no fear of consequence, since it was common place for klan members to not even be arrested, let alone convicted --- so of course blacks turned to self defense and using their constitutional rights to arms...Black citizen gun clubs like Deacons For Defense, Robert Williams' Black Armed Guard (which used to be a chapter of the NRA) and other groups were the ones protecting civil rights marchers down south during the Civil Rights movement..
.images33.jpg

Inspired by the book Robert Williams wrote, "Negroes With Guns" -- other black Americans were inspired to take up the same initiative to self defense -- Groups like The Black Panthers gained notoriety by doing something called "cop-watching" -- where they documented police actions while open carrying -- (as is their 2A right) to protect against the rampant police brutality during the time -- and because of this, triggered conservatives (including the NRA) urged Reagan to act -- and he did when signed his first gun control bill, directly targeting the collective rights of black folks...because no one was urging him to do it because of the KKK....

Which is precisely why Robert Williams' words still ring true today "[black folks] don't introduce violence into a racist social system, the violence was already there and has always been there...it is precisely this unchallenged violence that allows this racist social system to perpetuate itself. When people say they are opposed to [black folks] resorting to violence, what they really mean is they are opposed to [black folks] defending themselves and challenging the exclusive monopoly of violence practiced AGAINST them by racists"
