THESE men did not treat them as less than human beings. Each one, thrust into this position of 'master' treated those that they owned kindly. I challenge you to show different.

and while we're at it. Let us hear you justify the cruelty and barbarism shown to Southern noncombatant women, children, elderly, and animals at the orders of Sherman and his march to the sea. NO southern general ever did that to northern noncombatants.
There were atrocities on both sides. Southerners murdered civilians that were suspected of aiding and abetting Northern soldiers. There were more than 13,000 complaints of inhumane treatment from Union soldiers held captive in southern prisons. The very design of Southern prisons or to destroy the lives of the soldiers have captive and murder many of them ( much higher mortality rates than their Northern counterparts ) despite the laws and customs of warfare. They also practice scorched Earth policies to deprive Northern soldiers of any food or shelter as a progressed further south. Southerners robbed and burned small towns in an effort to terrorize civilians. People are people, it's easy to be good to one another and be at our best at times of peace, not so easy at times of war and stress. There's nothing romantic about war on either side. It is barbaric and it shows how uncivilized we still are.

The great misnomer of mistreatment of slaves begs the question of what would happen if farmers mistreated their farm animals. The premise is illogical as are most arguments from today’s democrats.
The respect Southerners show towards blacks during the civil war is best illustrated by The fort pillow massacre of April 12th 1864. Although most of the black regiment surrendered, all were murdered by the Confederate soldiers. They did not take a single prisoner. So much for southern respect for black people. Overall, the slave trade cars more than 5 million unnecessary deaths during its existence. Not to mention all the abuse, hardship and disrespect let's guard the lives of many more millions.

Final sentence should read, " scarred the lives of many more millions. "

THE GOV"T sanctioned this Stann. It wasn't a one time thing it was all across the several states. INTENDED. INTENTIONAL, CRUEl, INHUMANE, DISGUSTING. You guys start shit and then when people respond in kind you think you have the high road. YOU. Do. NOT.

Makes you wonder why northerners still ridicule southerners.

Farm animals do not have the intelligence to know they are captive. They simply exist. Comparing blacks to farm animals just shows how out of touch you are. No amount of Goodwill can make a person enjoy their captivity. In the system of slavery, brute Force and even the all too often lethal example would have to be made in order to dominate and control ( or as Southerners often say, " Keep them in their place. " The black population. Whatever Harmony and respect existed was only in the minds of the whites of that day.

My people were essentially indentured servants ( white slaves ) in the North. Like I said, all people have their faults. There are no exceptions.

This is great news.

They can preserve history in a more appropriate place.
Yeah, like here.

Segments of history will remain, not matter how they try to erase it. Stupidity in action.

Nothing like what the North did. Remember, this was a war about reclaiming the South for the North and a war of independence for the South. I don’t recall Americans wiping out the British empire after Americans won independence.

History cannot be changed. Thank God constant reminders of so much pain and sorrow are eliminated from the sites of people everyday. Most of those statues were erected to keep blacks in their place to remind them who's in charge and remind them of the horrible past. No one should have to live with that kind of threat over their lives.

It was a war to prevent the destruction of the United States of America by traitorous scumbags.

They fought for states rights. Do you think the North had no slaves? Maybe you think the north welcomed escaped southern slaves or freed slaves with open arms?? LOLOLOL Maybe you don't know that Mrs. Grant and her personal slave visited with her husband US Grant in Virginia behind Union lines? Perhaps you think most southerners had slaves? LOL Perhaps you don't know that blacks owned slaves in both the north and south.

VP Harris's father's family were big slave owners.

Those "states rights" was to preserve Slavery it is in every states secession declaration speeches.

Come on this is a losing argument since owning people is bad no matter how well you treat them it is still bondage to them.

You're trying to relate apples with oranges. It doesn't work. This was American's fighting other Americans for the nation.

Shame. That is key Virginian history. The Left, wanting to hide from all of history just because it was inconvenient and distasteful to them--- what next, take down the WTC monument because it harks back to that terrible day on Sept 11, 2001?
They should have saved all those statues and put them in a museum about the civil war, dependent on when and why, the reason it was built in the first place. It was meant to intimidate blacks after the civil war to keep them in their place and remind them of their place in society, then it should be put in a museum about the Confederacy, paid for by people who support such contemptuous views and definitely not text dollars.

And definitely not tax dollars.
