The Republican lawmaker tried to argue that immigrant violence is worse than gun violence in the U.S.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) lashed out Wednesday at a parent of one of the victims of last year’s mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, in an attempt to eject him from the U.S. House chambers for speaking out of turn.

Gaetz drew complaints from the audience as he tried to argue that violence caused by undocumented immigrants is worse than the toll of gun violence in the United States (guns killed 40,000 people last year, compared with one rough estimate of 400 homicides attributed to illegal immigrants). Gaetz said that funding a border wall would help curb both problems. He was speaking at a hearing on House Resolution 8, which would require a background check for every firearm sale.

“I hope that we’ll deal with all the drivers of violence,” he said. “The greatest driver of violence — in the circumstances that I indicated — was not the firearm. It’s the fact that we have an immigration system that allows people to come here violently ...”

He was cut off by shouts and grumbles from the audience, but one voice in particular rose above the rest: That of Manuel Oliver, father of Joaquin Oliver, who was killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, 2018. He sat next to Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime was also killed in the shooting, as they aired their displeasure at Gaetz’s comments.

“Manny stood up and said, ‘That’s a lie. That’s not true,’ and I yelled out that our children were killed by an American male,” Guttenberg told HuffPost. “Mr. Gaetz didn’t care for the truth and made an inquiry to see if we could be kicked out.”

In a fit of frustration, Gaetz pointed his finger directly at Oliver as he inquired whether House Judiciary Chair Jarrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) could eject him from the hearing.

“I’d observe that that was three interruptions from the same individual,” said Gaetz, who received $2,500 in donations related to the National Rifle Association in the 2018 election cycle, according to Open Secrets.

Gaetz ― who was condemned last year for inviting a Holocaust denier and white nationalist to the State of the Union address ― doubled down on Twitter, saying that anyone worried about gun violence should “join us to #BuildTheWall.”

Gaetz is an evil and heartless little man - as is clearly obvious when he invited a Holocaust denier and white nationalist to the State of the Union. He also lies. What do you think?

Someone is lying about gun violence deaths...my guess is the Slimes included suicides

In 2018 alone, including the most recent carnage at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, there have been 47,220 gun-related incidents resulting in 11,984 deaths in the United States, according to data compiled by Gun Violence Archive, an independent data-collection and research group.

About two-thirds were suicides according to the link.

I think that watching a liar like you call another person a liar is like watching OJ Simson call someone a spousal abuser.

Puts it a little more in perspective

Why are Republicans afraid of the truth regarding gun violence in America? Also, homegrown terrorists are a much greater threat than immigrants. Statistics prove that.

You and your employers at the huffy post are lairs. You don't compare homicide rates with suicide and accident rates. If you what to compare Americans killed in accidents with illegals, they would be comparative in numbers and illegals would far out pace Americans as a percent of the population. You would also have to include the 10s of thousands being killed by illegal drugs.

Bullshit. Suicide by gun is far more deadly than by any other method. No second chances or stomach pumps with a bullet to the head

And consider this...nearly every mass shooting is a suicide

The problem was the idiot that kept interrupting. You're not an honest person.

Shame on Gaetz.
Shame on you for lying about what really happened. People like you are the real problem in this country. Lying jackal.
When you claim someone is lying it's considered a "good idea" to point out what that lie supposedly was and then back up your claim

js
If you believe the person speaking is lying, then wait until they're done and use your turn to point it out and provide some evidence. Interrupting someone repeatedly is not how we handle things. Idiot.

Shame on Gaetz.
Shame on you for lying about what really happened. People like you are the real problem in this country. Lying jackal.
That politician is guilty of being insensitive and nothing more. The parent lost a child and is grieving. Hopefully he learns from this. p.s...however you are due for one of your progressive socialist indoctrinated kids who has been driven nuts to spaz out again. The guns are the tools used. The reasons are what we must confront.

if our goal is to reduce gun violence, we ought to penalize criminals, not law-abiding citizens.

Typical commie, you can't compare self inflicted injuries to injuries inflicted by others. All the injuries inflicted by illegals are 100% preventable by not allowing them in the country.
