He was standing ground and reaching for gun instead of getting out of the way (as he should have per manual), got pushed onto the left light/fender of the car, and was firing at the driver as he moved to the left and the car was passing him.

Any questions about self defense are gone as soon as he continues shooting at a passing car. He wasn't defending, he was trying to stop the driver by any means and that is an illegal use of force, that is homicide.
