[ I wrote this piece on 5/19/2006 for an old forum called e-thepeople.org. In my opinion, it's applicable in today's society. ]
ReMap America - - Diversity Abounds
The inevitable changes to the make-up of America have arrived in an obvious and pronounced fashion. Diversity has always been a part of this nation, but the degree in which it has accelerated over the past twenty years is astounding. It’s as if small countries of different nationalities relocated within our cities and communities over-night. Large and growing populations of immigrants from around the world are now calling America home.
We’re now exposed to a variety of cultures and languages not easily understood or cordially accepted by those of us accustomed to society as it had been in the past. Accepting change, for the most part, doesn’t happen over-night for most of us, it takes time to adjust and adapt. The impulse to protect one’s territory and traditional way of life is a natural reaction to a sudden change in an established social environment.
As we see new peoples, coming to a new land, with renewed hope for a better life, lets not forget the roots of our past. Our ancestors came to a new land, with that same renewed hope for a better life, an established this nation we call America. While we look into the new face of America, lets look with pride and patriotism. After all, those that came, and are still coming, chose America among many nations.
To honor our past, we must not deny anyone a future. Diversity brought us to the point we are today, and diversity will point the way to the future of America.
