The red-lipped batfish is a unique species of fish, dwells mainly in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. They are mostly found near the Island of Galapagos and Peru at depths of 3 to 76 meters. The species is easily identified because the bright reddish lips which give the appearance of a makeup. The bright red color of the lips is believed to help the fish in trying to attract a mate. The body color of this species is light brown and grayish color on the back, while the underside is white. The snout and horn is a brownish color.

On the top side, there is usually a dark brown stripe running from the head along its back reaching the tail. These types of fish are not the good swimmers. Instead, they take a posture that resembles walking on the floors of the oceans using pectoral fins which are extremely adapted to walking. After reaching maturity, the dorsal fin changes and protrudes like spine, which is believed to use to attract prey.
