An interesting thing about daisies…

The structure that you think is a flower is actually composed of many flowers. The whole structure is called a pseudanthium. You can see, in your picture, that the center part is made of many items, each of which is actually a complete flower in itself. Each of the objects around the outside, that you think is a petal, is also each a complete flower.

The flowers in the center, that actually look like flowers, are called disk flowers, and the ones around the outside, that look like petals, are called ray flowers.

Not all pseudanthia have both kinds of flowers; dandelions, for example, have only ray flowers.
