Between 1959 and 1961, jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins took a famous sabbatical from the stage, practicing on the pedestrian walkway of the Williamsburg Bridge for up to 16 hours a day. He sought refuge there to hone his craft loudly in solitude without disturbing his pregnant neighbor in his Lower East Side apartment.
