Suja in southwestern Kursk Region is under the control of the Russian army, the Defense Ministry said. This is the only town that the AFU occupied during the attack on Kursk Region in August 2024.
Russian troops have liberated the town of Suja, located in the southwest of the Kursk region, the Defense Ministry said. Ukrainian troops had held control of the town since August 2024, when they broke the border in the Sujansky district.
The settlements of Melovoy and Podol were also liberated.
On March 8, Russian troops launched an offensive in several directions in Kursk Region. On March 9, the Russian Defense Ministry reported the liberation of the village of Lebedevka, which is located 10 km northwest of Suja. On the same day, the ministry published footage of strikes on a column of AFU military equipment leaving Suja.
To break through the Ukrainian army's positions, Russian servicemen used the main gas pipeline that used to supply gas to Europe. On March 11, Alexander Khinshtein, the deputy governor of Kursk Region, said that the operation, called “Potok,” lasted six days. The Russian military traveled 14 kilometers along the gas pipe, and then got to the surface already at the gas-measuring station in Suzha.
Earlier, the Kremlin, commenting on the operation to regain control over Suja, said that the Russian army was “advancing successfully.” Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov assessed the dynamics of the fighting as good.
Fighting in Kursk Region has been ongoing since August 6, 2024. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Ukrainian military managed to take control of 1,268 square kilometers of the territory of Kursk Region (the area of the entire region is 29,900 square kilometers). By February, they managed to liberate over 800 square kilometers, or about 64% of the occupied territory, the General Staff reported.
The area of Suja is 434 hectares. The city is located in the southwest of Kursk region, 105 km from Kursk and 8 km from the border with Ukraine. Since 2004, Suja is a municipality within the urban settlement of the same name and is the center of the Sujansky district. According to Rosstat data as of January 2024, 4941 people lived in the city.
