Pretty sure I do not get enough potassium. Wondering about supplements.

I have read in several places that we need to have 4600mgs of potassium every day. Now, that seems a bit ridiculous and maybe I am reading that wrong. Let me put it this way. One banana has about 360mgs of potassium. So, taking out my trusty calculator and doing some simple math, that is about 12 bananas A DAY.

I know there is potassium in other things like spinach etc. The point is that seems like A LOT of potassium. Cause any combination of anything in order to equal 4600mgs of potassium per day is A LOT of stuff.

I know I am probably reading all of that wrong, but does anyone you know get enough potassium per day? How?

Hell the supplements I have researched gives you about 200mgs of potassium per serving. How many freaking servings would that be to get to 4600 every day?

What am I missing?
If potassium gets low it can cause some really weird symptoms, like cramping muscles etc. I had my right hand cramp up so badly once I could hardly shift gears in the car. So I started taking the supplement like the doctor had told me to.
It did give me heartburn; most medicines do, though, so that's nothing earth shattering.
If you insist on doing it through diet, broccoli is also high in potassium, if I remember right. And don't some sports drinks include it? Maybe Gatorade or something would be better than eating a dozen bananas.
Yeah, true. My point is it has to be wrong about 4600mgs. Then again I cramp up too. I know I am not getting enough, but when I read 4600...I mean come on.

My point with the bananas is I am pretty sure bananas are one of those foods that are notorious sources for potassium. So, if I have to consume 12 of those every day to get to 4600, how much spinach (or any other thing) would I need to take every day?

Something seems wrong about that number. Oh, and since I also suffer from gerd, I really cannot eat bananas since that is one of those foods that trigger it.

I dry and chop up the excess spinach I raise then add it to my food dishes like spaghetti marinara and the like. I read that supposedly dried spinach retains it's nutritional value better than canning or freezing. So if you're looking for an alternate potassium source you might try that.

Low Magnesium will also cause cramps. I think a lot of people are getting less because of the GMO chemicals desiccate the minerals out of much of the food. If it takes minerals out of plants it is also robbing those nutrients out of us when it is consumed. I also noticed that radiated fruits aren't rotting and even the little pesty fruit flies don't want anything to do with grapes that have been in the scrap bucket for well over a month now.

Most treatment for reflux also depletes magnesium. People need to make sure they buy those that have a magnesium supplement included.

If your potassium was low they wouldn't have discharged you from the hospital yet.

I wasn't. That's why I am not entirely sure what he was talking about. I think he may have been attempting humor there. Not sure.

Welp, I am not going to do half the shit you guys are saying. Seems like a lot of work.

Sure seems to me consuming 4600mgs of potassium a day is rather expensive. I am in the 1% too and it may make me broke in a year. 8 glasses of v8 per day? A large bushel of bananas a day?

Oh well.

Move to Florida. You can drink coconut water for free and grow your own bananas.

I am in Florida. Growing fruit and vegetables brings the whole Florida food chain to your house.

From birds to rodents to venemous snakes and on and on and on....

No thanks.:dig:

Seriously, are any of you really consuming 4600mgs of potassium every day?

Another thing you can do with that dried spinach and other dried seasonings. I make my own sprinkles to put on salad and other things like sprinkling it on baked potatoes. It's a great way to use up your dried; spinach, basil, parsley, oregano, chopped onion, chopped garlic, etc,... and whatever else you might like to add like Mrs Dash. This keeps my seasonings rotated so they're halfway fresh. I just mix them all together along with crushing up some cheap pretzels to take the place of croutons. Then all I have to have is a empty grated parmesan cheese container, that comes with the closing sprinkler option, to put the mix in. Doesn't even have to be refrigerated since it's all dried items anyway.

Sea salt has potassium chloride.

You should but it at the store.

You should consume a pinch of it every day in your dinner.

Almost 90% of all sea salt is now refined. He needs Himalayan salt (pink). You can cook with it, eat it, bath in it and they even have Himalayan salt lamps. He'll get the best quality minerals including potassium by using Himalayan salt. There is no purer salt on the market (that I know of). I keep it in my kitchen and it is the best salt I've ever tasted.

Ask a doctor. Get a blood test. Too much is bad just like too little is bad. Don't be one of those idiots who never goes to a doctor until they get sick. Have an annual physical. Preventative medicine is the easiest way to prevent diseases. Waiting until a problem develops is often much harder to resolve. Example: Don't wait until Type II Diabetes develops before doing something about your diet and exercise lifestyle.

Potassium (K) in Blood
....Many foods are rich in potassium, including bananas, orange juice, spinach, and potatoes. A balanced diet has enough potassium for the body's needs. But if your potassium levels get low, it can take some time for your body to start holding on to potassium. In the meantime, potassium is still passed in the urine, so you may end up with very low levels of potassium in your body, which can be dangerous.

A potassium level that is too high or too low can be serious. Abnormal potassium levels may cause symptoms such as muscle cramps or weakness, nausea, diarrhea, frequent urination, dehydration, low blood pressure, confusion, irritability, paralysis, and changes in heart rhythm.

Other electrolytes, such as sodium, calcium, chloride, magnesium, and phosphate, may be checked in a blood sample at the same time as a blood test for potassium....

3500 mgs of potassium a day is the requirement. Not 4600 mgs. I posted a link for the ten highest foods and they are inexpensive. Add Himalayan salt to your diet and toss the table salt. It's not good for you.
