I think that pre-Christian, even the most ancient science was closer to real natural science than Christianity and Newtonianism.
For example, the views of the ancients about the celestial spheres correspond to modern observations with telescopes, indeed the stars are distributed in the spheres and distant stars make up a separate sphere.
