I loved being in the airborne infantry, but this song was always in my heart.

War is too damn important to be left to politicians.

Going back to 1949

OK Prof,

If we're going back to the 1940's, we must include Dame Vera Lynn.

For you Rolls Royce Merlin lovers, you'll want to put on your headphones.

In the darkest days after the fall of Europe to the Nazis, Great Britain stood alone. Their tiny island was not expected to withstand the upcoming assault by the Nazi juggernaut. Yet they stood firm. The pugnacious Britons would "never be slaves". In grim resolve they waited their grisly fate. Better to die on their feet than to live on their knees.

From this gloom came the voice of an angel. If there was a one chance in a thousand for survival, they could still dream of a life after the nightmare of slaughter. As their cities burned, the Britons were inspired by Vera Lynn's call for hope.

With their army shattered in France and evacuated home without their heavy weapons, it rested upon the young pilots of the RAF to fend off the German invasion. This video couples Dame Lynn's song with a tribute to the Spitfires and Hurricane crews who stood up to the Nazis. Those few young, outnumbered men tipped the balance between survival and death of a culture. As Churchill later stated:

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
