Case in point... the difference between a Pit Bull and another powerful breed - the German Shepherd.
Earlier this summer, for us, the nightmare happened.
A Lowes truck pulled up to our property. They were at the wrong address, and therefore I wasn't expecting or prepared for company.
Xena started barking while looking out our "all glass" storm door. I recognized it has her "human bark".
I get up and look out the window to see a fella walking up the drive. I got to the back door because I don't want to risk Xena escaping the front while I open the door. So I walk out the side door, I no more than get 3 steps off the patio when Xena breaks the storm door latch and runs out. Thank God, and I mean than God the man froze. Xena ran right up to him within 2 feet of him and places herself between the front door and him. I knew the worst thing I could do was to walk towards him. I was also WAY more afraid if what the man would do than Xena.
So I spent more time instructing him than her.
I told him in as calm a voice as possible to not move, do not speak, and don't even think of looking at her. Just simply stand there.
Xena was now focused equally on me as him. Looking to see what my reaction was. So I sat down on the ground and in a friendly voice pretended to talk to him. I even faked laughing. It was working. Xena walked towards me looking back and forth between me and the dude.
Just as she was getting close enough I could grab her colllar - sure enough the man ***** up and speaks I think he said "that was close".
Dammit. Xena reacts by running right at him, and now standing less than a foot from him. Down in a "ready" pose with ears back.
I knew I had to do something. So I know her favorite thing in life is to get into my suv with me and go to the park and walk.
So I walked towards the truck, opened the hatch and started saying "go for a walk" - this confused her. Confusion is better than ready to pounce. Sure enough she jogs towards me and I grabbed her,
A German Shepherds instinct is to protect. And they will give up their own life to do so. But they don't want to. Their first instinct is drive the offender away, And stay with the pack. Staying with the pack is their primary instinct. Not running and attack and ask questions later. Their instinct is to ask questions first, and when in doubt - attack.
