Some of those "bases" are nothing more than buildings. Our Navy "base" in Montgomery AL was our recruiting district headquarters. He had half the first floor in an office park. We had people assigned to Gunter AF station.

We had a base in Egypt during the Gulf War that was a couple of tents alongside a dirt runway where they flew in supplies for the ships in the Red Sea.

Most of those overseas bases are co-located as a hangar on a foreign country's air base.

Most of the bases we had in the Mediterranean back in the 80's and 90s were all closed. We used to have facilities in Crete and Athens. The Navy has a base in Naples, but no longer in Gaeta. The only real ports we have are in Rota, Spain. Back then we had no ships homeported there. Now we do. The bases in Iceland and the Azores are no more.

Part of the problems we have in responding to a crisis is lack of secure facilities around the world. Remember the USS Cole?

I really don't need to prove that this also happened during the Gulf War, my memory of the incidents (I was still in the service as the time) is good enough for me.
