It was a year when Republicans had a very good year, retaking the senate, gaining seats in the House and picking up key governorships. 9/11 had cowed the Democrats into supporting Bush, and Democrats were demoralized.

And in this election, Mitt Romney only got 49% of the vote. That was it. When the 2006 election loomed, polls showed him trailing Devall Patrick by double digits. People wanted to bounce him out in the worst way. .
