Penn St 100, Notre Dame 6

If he’s fired then he’s a failure.
No, he would be a hot commodity for many other programs. He just can’t get his Penn St teams to win big games. He’s a good coach, not a failure… but “good” doesn’t always cut it at an elite program

None of them won it all but all came close.
Players are different than coaches first off.

Wilt won a championship and was considered the greatest center in the league many years, Jim Kelly was definitely a HOF QB, but was never considered better than Joe Montana, John Elway, or Dan Marino when he played.

Marv Levy could be a similar story to Franklin, but at least Levy would get the Bills to the title game, and regularly beat other great teams.

Franklin pretty much just doesn’t beat other great teams.

1-15 vs top 5… and they regularly have top 10 or even top 5 teams themselves. They just lose the big game that would elevate them to the top tier, like every time lol

Maybe he’ll return to Maryland and beat Penn St in several consecutive seasons. 😉

I wasn't enthused about some of the seeding and 12 teams, but the cream rose to the top.

The SEC got clowned this year.
OSU killed Tennessee
Michigan beat Alabama
OSU beat Texas
Georgia Lost to Notre Dame

Maybe. For PSU’s stature and expectations.. it Just doesn’t seem to be working at Penn St for whatever reason
They make the semifinals and you say it isn’t working?
Tom Osborne lost key games that prevented national championships 12 times in 20 years. He won three over the next 4 years after that including the team that was likely greatest ever in 1995. You would have fired him before that. Lefty got railroaded by race politics and Terps basketball took 15 years to recover. They got spoiled by Gary Williams’ national championship, fired him anyway and they haven’t been anywhere close since then. Penn St should be grateful for their situation. Otherwise send Franklin to Maryland and watch Penn St disappear. Look at USC now vs Pete Carroll era. Look at Nebraska post-Osborne/Devaney. Watch post-Saban Alabama fade again as they did after Bear Bryant.

You’re still thinking too black and white here.

I agree they should value Franklin and be grateful. But coaching elite programs has different standards. Look at Jim Harbaugh when he came to Michigan in the mid 2010’s… he immediately elevated the program to a ranked, high end program again. But, he lost to OSU every year, and couldn’t get past them, thus not getting into the CFP. If Harbaugh didn’t beat OSU in 2019, he would have been fired. Despite his ability to make the program elite again, he would have had an established ceiling.

Franklin has an established ceiling. Of course, he could lead Penn St to championships the next 3 years… but there’s data we can look at. Penn St should value Franklin, but they should probably also consider other options to get over the hump.

Penn St is an attractive program, they could get a big established name

Meh, if Notre Dame was not in it I'd not even pay any attention to the college football championship.....And that is mainly due to the tradition involved.

They don't make timeless movies about any other school except maybe Army or Navy

If I have to pick Notre Dame or OSU I pick Notre Dame. Ohio can't get another championship. Then they'll only be 1 behind Michigan. And if I had to guess, over the next 20 years, OSU will probably win more national championships than Michigan. They seem to be the Alabama of the North.

If Ohio wins that will be good for the Big 10.

Where the hell did Notre Dame come from? I had no idea they were good this year.
